Occupation Interests / Re: "Capitalist" as an occupation?
« on: Sunday 30 December 18 21:06 GMT (UK)  »
Just came across "capitalist" listed as an occupation for the first time today, and visited the official census website to read up on the appropriate interpretation (it's amazing how much easier it is to find answers in 2018 compared to 2004 when this question first posted!).

According to the Feds, census takers were to report as "capitalists" not only people who received income primarily generated by rental property or loans, but also from stocks, bonds, or other investments. For the official explanation of occupations listed on the 1870-1900 censuses, check out:

Europe / Moressey / Morissey in Madeira
« on: Thursday 26 August 10 05:02 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for information on a family named Moressey (or Morissey) involved in the wine trade in Madeira during the late 18th century.

While I don't have any information on the father, I do know they were Catholic and had three daughters: Mary, Ann, and Catherine, all born sometime during the 1780s.  They were sent back to England to attend the Bar Convent school in York in 1793.

Since this information pertains to research I'm doing for my PhD, any leads would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Kathy

Other Countries / Duff family in Jamaica and Portugal - early 19th C
« on: Thursday 26 August 10 04:36 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for information on two branches of what are probably the same Duff family - one in Jamaica; one in Portugal - about the turn of the 19th century.  Unfortunately, I don't know the fathers, but I'm fairly sure that the ones in Jamaica were planters or merchants, while those in Lisbon, Portugal were probably wine merchants.

I do have is information on four of their daughters:

In Lisbon:   Isabella and Frances Duff, born abt 1820-1825
In Jamaica:  Jemima and Margaret Duff, born abt 1815-1820

Both families were Catholic, and two of the girls, Frances and Jemima, evidently became nuns.

Since this information is related to research I am doing for my PhD, any leads would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Kathy

England / Re: Whitechurch Family in Cambridge

Shaun, I see you found the Coleridge book - I thought you had found my tree at Ancestry.  :)

Your observations are correct about the appropriate age to become a nun; however, the average age of students coming into the convent school was 10. It seems a bit odd that the family would send three girls of marriagable age to the school with children so much younger, though I will admit that there are rare instances of girls as young as 3 or as old as 20 in attendance.  These were highly unusual; the 20 yr olds, for example, came escape the French Revolution, while the 3 yr old came with older sisters after their mother died.

That being said, I did find a second marriage date of 1798 for Page and Ann, which alters birthdates for their children - Page Jr, for example, is listed on KK with a 1791 birthdate, while the census records lists him as 1803. I'm looking into this some more to see what develops.  I wish there was a "Louisa" listed on the KK tree; I'd be more convinced. . .

Thanks for checking, Rosie,

I agree with you - I don't believe that's the Elizabeth I'm looking for; in this case, the date is too late.  I'm still inclined to think that these girls are related to Page and Anne, especially since there is an Ann Whitechurch living with an old Catholic priest in 1841, just down the road from an older Ann, a younger Page, and an Ambrose Whitechurch.

I know we'll get this sorted!

Lancashire / Re: Walton Family in Everton/Liverpool abt 1790

Duh!  I hadn't thought about Everton in Yorkshire!!  I'm so used to dealing with the Liverpool area that I automatically focused my search there.  Thanks again, Shaun, I'll check it out.

Thanks for your reply, Shaun,

I'd come across that tree before and feel fairly confident that they are related to the girls I'm trying to identify; however, the two girls listed in KK are too old to be students in 1825.  That being said, given the tradition of naming children after favorite siblings or parents, it seems likely that they might be the daughters of one of Page and Ann's sons - the question is which one.

I find it hard to believe that all family members named Whitechurch/Whitchurch simply died off without getting into the records someplace, though I suppose its possible.  It surprises me that the name barely shows up in a general internet search!

For now, I'll keep looking.
Cheers,
Kathy

England / Whitechurch Family in Cambridge
« on: Wednesday 18 August 10 03:17 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for a family named Whitechurch who had three daughters - Antoinette, Louise, and Elizabeth - and were living in or near Cambridge in the 1820s.  The family was Catholic, and apparently relocated to that area after 1810 (as Elizabeth, later a nun, reported her place of birth as Surrey).   Unfirtunately, I have no other information on the family - any leads will be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Kathy

Lancashire / Walton Family in Everton/Liverpool abt 1790
« on: Wednesday 18 August 10 02:11 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to locate the parents/family of three sisters - Harriet, Sarah, and Eliza Walton - who would have been born between 1785 and 1792.  The family was Catholic and may have originally come from Ireland; the girls listed Everton as their place of residence when they enrolled in school at the Bar Convent in York 1796-1797, but I have been unable to identify their parents, spouses or other family members. They don't appear in the Lancashire Parish Records online, and there are no Waltons listed in Gore's 1766 directory, so I'm inclined to think they moved to the Liverpool area after 1791 Catholic Relief Act.  I'm hoping someone out there has ties to 18th century Waltons and can point me in the right direction.

Any leads will be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Kathy
