Essex Lookup Requests / Messent Family of Wethersfield c1788-1818
« on: Thursday 12 August 10 07:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm trying to find the baptism of Samuel Messent born circa 1788 in Weathersfield, Essex, according to the 1861 Census. His middle name may be Romsey/Rumsey. His first-born son was named Samuel Romsey Messent.

I have also found in the 1861 Census a Daniel Messent, bc1795 Wethersfield, and a William Messent, bc1783 Wethersfield, both residing in Dunmow, Stebbing.

I have also found an Edward Rumsey Messent in the FreeBDM index who died in 1890, aged 72, in Lambeth but I can find no other record of him in any censuses.

I'm wondering if they are all related?

Any help in solving this would be great.
Thanks,
Redladybug

Yes, he did! But he didn't have any children by her so she raised her sister's children and didn't have any of her own. Then 18 years later Mary Ann died and William Henville Burford married again six months later but outside the Messent family this time.

And that's not all that happened in this family - it happened with the Samuel Stokes, too. Eliza died and so Samuel married her younger sister Letitia Messent! Letitia did go on to have 4 children by him so she raised her sister's 2 surviving children and hers!!

A bit strange it happening twice in the same family. So out of 4 sisters there was only 2 husbands!

Also, the information you just gave me shows Mary Ann as being the witness at Elizabeth's wedding and then she ends up marrying the groom!

This is wonderful, Karenlee. You are adding so much to my family tree.  :D

I wonder if you are able to find any births/baptisms of the children of Jemima MESSENT and Thomas Temlett BROWN? I know that had at least one, Letitia, who came out in the ship with them in 1858 but they may have had others as they married in 1851. I found a Letitia Brown b 1855 in Poplar, London in the FreeBDM but don't know if that's the correct one.

The other baptisms to find would be the STOKES children. The family also came out in 1858 with both children dying on the voyage. Such a tradegy. They were Selina & Samuel.

Thanks again for all your help,
RedLadybug

I only have the years and the participants so what you are giving me is all new and fantastic.  Thanks so much.  :D

Thanks for checking, anyway, and yes, I'd love the marriages.

I think there should be 4, maybe 5. The whole family except Joseph, I think, emigrated to Adelaide, South Australia by 1861, some even before 1841 so finding them in censuses is impossible!

I have:
Elizabeth m 1833 William Henville BURFORD
Benjamin m 1849 Mary Ann KNIGHT
Eliza m 1854 Samuel STOKES
Jemima m 1851 Thomas Temlett BROWN
Joseph m 1853 Margaret Gotham BARBER

Oh, hugs, Karenlee! That's my great, great grandmother and I've never found her actual place of birth! That's wonderful.

You wouldn't happen to be able to look up the rest of the family would you? If so, I'll list all the one's I know - there's 11 of them in total from Elizabeth in 1814 to Letitia in 1836.

Hugs,

That fits! If only it gave more detail. Like ages and parents. lol. Can't have everything.  :) I've been looking for this marriage for decades!

Thanks for such a quick reply, Karenlee.

Cheers,

Hi,
I would be very grateful if someone could lookup the Marriage of Sam MESSENT and Sarah FOWLE

They should have married about 1814 possibly in the St Georges region. Samuel and Sarah's first known child, Elizabeth, was born circa 1814, place unknown. Their second child, Mary, was born circa 1815 in St Georges, Middlesex. Samuel MESSENT was born circa 1788 in Weatherfield, Essex and Sarah (maiden name unknown) was born circa 1793 in Barnes, Middlesex.

Thanks,
RedLadybug
