World War Two / Re: HMS Anking WW2
« on: Thursday 01 December 16 03:31 GMT (UK)  »
My uncle, George Hutchinson was on HMS Anking.  I have just been to Singapore and been to Changi where we always thought that he was imprisoned.  I was given a document from the curator at Changi completed by my uncle that states that he was captured on 24 March 1942. Under the name of camp or hospital it says Watis, Djockakart, Bondoeng, Java from 24.3.42 to 8.7.43 there is then another place - Wakayana, Ikuno, Japan from 16.11.43 to 10.3.45.  As you can see there is a gap of 20 days from when the Anking was sunk and also a gap of 4 months from one camp to another.  Our family were always under the impression that he was a POW at Changi and this could still be the case although maybe for only a short while before being sent to either Java or Japan.  One of the very few things that uncle spoke about was that a Dr had to take out the appendix of someone using a penknife whilst they were on Tenko. Another thing he said was that one of the camp helpers asked him where he came from and he answered, Yorkshire.  From that day the helper called him Mr Yorkie.  He also made his children stand at the side of the road every morning, bow to him and say good morning Mr Yorkie.  He, of course, could not reply. Does anyone have any info regarding my uncle.

I have Sarah Ainsworth and Frederick Law in my family tree.  Frederick had brother, Thomas b 1813 m Elizabeth Herring b 1814.  On marriage cert for Thomas and Elizabeth they were both living at Hamer Mill.  Thomas and Frederick were born in Rotherham.  Their Parents were Thomas b 1781 and Martha b 1788. On 1861 census Frederick and Sarah had living with them Sarah E Law their niece age 6 who was born in Auckland New Zealand.  Sarah E was the daughter of John Hauge Law and his wife Ann who went to Australia in 1851 shortly after they married in Manchester and had daughter Marianne in Melbourne.  They then went to Auckland and had 3 more Children the last one Annie was born after John Hague Law died in 1856.  I believe Sarah E is actually Sarah Helen Law from birth cert obtained from New Zealand.  I would be very interested to know more abou at the Ainsworth/Law connection.  Regards B Law

I know that it was a while ago when you were asking for details of William Strother and his wife Sarah.  I have a William Stother who married a Sarah Gale. Unfortunately I do not have Williams DOB or date of his marriage. William and Sarah lived in Ripon where he was a boot and shoe maker.  He had at least 2 children - Susan and Elizabeth. DOB's for these are also unknown.  I realised that the surname is slightly different but at the beginning of my hand written book the name started off as Strother and the family lived in various places including Killinghall, Ilkley, Armley, Beadale, Knarsborough and originally came from Wallington, Northumblerland.  Do you have any more information of your family of Strothers.  The book that I have was written in 1825 and goes back to 1709.
