Dear hanes and Alan.
Excellent! Many thanks for the additional details, speaking to my father in-law he tells me he had no idea of the award to Christopher Flynn. He and his sister are very grateful.

Thank you kindly both of you, That is a great help. We were not sure on the birth of Christopher Flynn, and yes it appears his middle name was indeed Bernard. This does place more meat on the bones as to say..

I am told there was mentioned through the family there was a connection to one William Leefe Robinson, a WWI flying Ace..

Hi All.
I am trying to help my father in-law with his lost part of his ancestry.
Looking for the 1901 census for  Christopher Flynn bn 1874-1876 Wife Lilian Grace bn 1876, believed to be living at Walton on the Hill, West Derby, Lancashire, England.
Any help would be gratefully received.

Thank you.

Photo here is of Bertie

If you apply for the Birth Certificate of Bertie's Son - Arthur George Margrave December Quarter 1918 West Ham Vol 4a page 116  Mother's Maiden Name = Pratt
I bet you'll find the Occupation of the Baby's Father won't be "Soldier" but rather "Railway Shunter "

There is an Ancestry Tree that has Arthur George Margrave born 9 October 1918 in Army Uniform in WW2

Gosh she will be so pleased with that, I am not on any of the  payment Ancestry websites now as its becoming very expensive, but might well make a trip to the library. Many thanks for your help, pretty sure all has come together with the uniform etc. Kind regards Tony.

I would agree with the others that he didn't serve overseas but
may have served at home.
The only way to know for sure would mean buying a birth cert.
for one of his children.
Shunters didn't wear uniforms however I notice in 1939 he's a railway guard
who did so this is how she probably remembers him.

Thanks Jim, I believe you are right, it all fits in, so grateful for your pointers. Regards Tony.

Only evidence i have is here say from his granddaughter and very little is known, so will have to ask some more questions.  I  can understand he might well have been exempt, and she just remembers him in a uniform. Thanks.

How could his granddaughter have seen him in uniform in WWI?  Do you mean a photograph?

Debra  :)

As i understand, she was very young and was a photograph but not in her possession, which might well have been a railway uniform. Very little details really. Thanks.

Do you have some evidence he served? As a Railway Shunter he'd likely be exempt from service being in a reserved occupation.

I agree with you  - Exempt

Only evidence i have is here say from his granddaughter and very little is known, so will have to ask some more questions.  I  can understand he might well have been exempt, and she just remembers him in a uniform. Thanks.

That is Possible- I have during Soldier research that many failed Medicals but the Army accepted them to serve in Regts at Home in the UK helping the War Effort for 4 years but were therefore not entitled to any WW1Medal-  so no Medal Index Card - there were Attestation Papers but in 1920 they were sent to Arnside Street Repository and didn't survive the Blitz so those Records were Destroyed and no longer exist.

Thank you kindly for your efforts and makes sense, believe it or not quite helpful to put this to bed... Regards.
