New Zealand Completed Requests / A few more questions!!!
« on: Monday 20 February 12 11:02 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you to everyone that has helped me with my research, just a couple more questions.

On a previous post MalNZ offered:

Hadley, Christiana.  settlement 9/4/1880. filed 14/7/1902 132 Pounds. executors, grandchildren.

Christina died in 1893 could the settlement 1880 be a typo?

Filed 1902 what does this mean?

Would the orginal record give more info and where would I get this?

Henry Josiah Wade born 1863 Christchurch NZ died in Victoria AU. I have a clipping that states Henry "served his appreticeship to the saddlery business with Mr W White of Christchurch, and afterwards worked at his trade in many of the principal centres in New Zealand"

Any ideas on who Mr W White is?

Is it possible to find apprentice or school records?

I think that is all!!

Thank you so much MalNZ, Lucy2 and Janette,

The info you have provided is great, and of course has given me more family to research. I think with what you have given me, it looks like I have about all I can get on Josiah Hadley and his wife Christina? I do not quiet get this in MalNZ reply:

Hadley, Christiana. (NB spelling difference)  settlement 9/4/1880. filed 14/7/1902 132 Pounds. executors, grandchildren.

Why would it be filed so much later and would there be any other documentation on this settlement and where would it be held?

I would appreciate any ideas on Henry Wade and his wife Susannah hadley, they arrived in NZ around 1859 -1863 with their infant daughter Susannah Elizabeth, she was born in New South Wales in 1859, so I assume NSW was their port of departure. Henry is noted as an Engineer but recently on the Electoral Rolls now on Ancestry I have found him to be a carpenter living in North Avon  Road, rural section 41 lot 9, this property is mentioned in his will. Henry died in 1888 and Susannah died in Victoria in 1901. Other than bdm and will Henry has also been hard to crack and I lack information on him. I have so MANY questions!!! The photo attached I sent to Jennifer Queree  curator of Decorative Arts NZ, she comments:

He is wearing a fireman's uniform so I expect he is part of the Volunteer Fire Service Brigade in Christchurch (or perhaps Lyttelton). The medals will be long service medals for the Fire Brigade. The Christchurch Volunteer Fire Brigade was formed in 1860.

From the width of the sleeves and the hairstyle, I would place the photo in the mid 1870s, which fits with the date of practice for Grand & Dunlop (as collodion photographers) who were in business between 1876-80.

This is a family photo but I just cannot work out who: Henry Wade and Susannah had two sons Henry Josiah b 1863 and John Francis b1866  but the time frame given would make them to young? Henry Wade was born in 1832, could this man be in his late 40's? Can information be obtained in the time period given on members of the fire brigade?

Once again thank you and look forward to your thoughts and ideas.
cheers

:o Thank you so much your reply was amazing. Yes I have Josiah's will but not other info on him and Yes the brother I suspected this, but now you have confirmed it. Lots more family for me to research now. I made this connection through research in England but was not sure if the John that came to New Zealand with wife and children was the same brother - the farmer thing threw me off.

Am happy to absorb anymore thoughts and info you have

Cheers

Hi Newbie,

All I have on death certificate is Avonside Cemetery, so I assume all is the same. Christina Hadley died 6 September 1893, buried on the 9th.

Henry wade died 28 May 1888, buried o  the 30th.

Thank you for your help and if you are unable to locate grave/headstone a photo of the cemetery would be great.

Cheers

Thank you that would be great.....and of course I can wait, My information came from the Canterbury Museum and at one time there must have been an inscription. Dont worry too much about headstone if it is difficult to locate or just cannot be found, I would love a photo of the cemetery.

area 6

964 - In memory of Susanna Elizabeth Wade, born in Goulburn, NS Wales 10 July 1859, died 8th May 1863. "come to my grave, our god to bless, who to my happy souls hath given, More than a mother's tenderness, A saviour's love, a home in heaven. Also of Charles Hadley Wade, who died 24 January 1866 aged 18 weeks.

Would I contact the Christchurch Council about the Weslyan Cemetery and the details of it being moved?

Cheers
Glenys ;D

This is great, Susannah Elizabeth Wade died in 1863 and it appears her brother is in the same grave.

Thank you for the Weslyan info, it looks like Josiah's body has been lost!!!....lol.

Hi everyone,

I am trying to research my NZ family over the internet from Tasmania. I have done the basics and obtained bdm certificates for my ancestors who mainly lived in the Christchurch area. I have shipping and probate records and would like advice on what I can do next to fill in those gaps or get a glimpse of who they were and what they did.

I have Josiah and Christina Hadley, he appears to have been a notable character and was a blacksmith "Engineer" They both died in Christchurch area I have death certificate and probate/will for Josiah, where could I look next for further information.

I have Henry and Susannah Wade, I have death certificates, probate/will, Henry was also noted as being an Engineer. Whats the possible research to obtain further info

I would love to hear your ideas, suggestions, contact information for NZ resources and suggested websites. I feel there must be so much more I can find out about these families!!

Cheers - Glenys, Tasmania
