Thanks Quaxar. The info I have on Robert Edward came originally from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow from their Medical Directories - it was presumed that his LM was probably gained at Trinity (but Trinity had been unable to find him when I queried his attendance there in 2002). Glasgow suggests he may have had connections with the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland but did not know in what capacity - possibly just demonstrated anatomy for them.
I contacted the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and they say their directories state "he was a Demonstrator in Anatomy in Lower Camden street and the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. The address in Lower Camden street probably refers to a private school of anatomy run by an individual surgeon. His License in Midwifery (LM) was probably obtained from a hospital medical school."
I presume I would have to travel to Dublin to search in the National Archives to further this search. Thanks for giving me some pointers and the info on the 1832 Act.

Thanks - that's where I found the marriage. Is it likely that there will be any further info in the actual register?

The Thomas Craine who went to W Australia is my direct line - he stole a lamb tup in 1860 and was transported for life. Thomas was Robert Edward's illegitimate son - it looks like a case of sowing wild oats while young - and I have been out to Greenough where he settled. Of all Robert Edward's children, Thomas' is the only line which goes beyond the next generation.

Wow, Thanks for that. Hugh is certainly right with both parents. There are huge gaps between the three children we have - 1838, 1843 and 1851. Presume there must have been more children but whether they all survived is another matter. At least it gives me a positive place in Antrim so that is a wonderful step forward.

The John Rankin - wholesale bedding manufacturer is a possibility but I have nothing to prove or disprove it, yet. In Glasgow, Agnes was a mill worker (on her marriage cert in 1867) and by 1871 she was a machinest. The Pattison menfolk were hand sewn boot and shoe makers. David rankin was a shipyard labourer in1901.

Leitrim / Johnston and Corscadden families
« on: Saturday 21 May 11 16:29 BST (UK)  »
My great, great grandfather JAMES JOHNSTON born 24 Sept 1854 was the son of Stephen Johnston and Catherine Corscadden. On his church baptism record the address is West Barrs  and the Parish/District = Cloonclare Church of Ireland.
Stephen Johnston of Drumbulbin married Catherine Corscadden of Manorhamilton on 18th sept 1845 at Cloonclare Church of Ireland. Stephen's father was George Johnston and Catherine's father was William Corscadden.
Stephen and Catherine also have two daughters born in Leitrim, Mary Jane b1852 and Catherine b 1859. Their next daughter Sarah Ann is born in Glasgow in 1864 but as the family do not appear in the Scottish 1861 census I feel they must have left Ireland between 1861 and 1864.
On Stephen Johnston's death certificate in Glasgow in 1870 his parents are George Johnston (farmer) and Letitia Johnston.
Catherine remarries after Stephen's death and her parents are shown as William Corscadden (farmer) and Elizabeth Hetherington.
Is there any way I can find out more about both Stephen and Catherine's parents? I have been unable to find either of their marriage dates. Thanks.

Antrim / Rankin family

12th July 1867 in Glasgow, Agnes Rankin married William Pattison - both were born in Ireland. It is not untill the 1901 census that it appears that Agnes was born in ANTRIM. Working back from the various census returns, she would have been born around 1843. On her marriage cert to William, her parents are listed as John Rankin (furniture dealer) and Sarah Hamilton. In both 1881 and 1901, Agnes' brother David Rankin is also living with the family - he was born in 1851. Any further info on any of the family would be most welcome. Thanks.

Dublin / medical ancestor

My 3xgreat grandfather Robert Edward Craine obtained his License in Midwifery in 1834 in Dublin and was, at some point, a 'Demonstrator of Anatomy' in Lower Camden Street, Dublin.  The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland suggest that this prob refers to a private medical school of anatomy run by an individual surgeon. Is there any way I can find out any more detail about who or what this might have been ie via street directories of the time? and where might I gain access to these?
He married Eleanor Isabella Kelly on 1st Jan 1836 in St Peter's Church, Dublin - both are said to have been living at Camden Street. Any further info on Eleanor would be wonderful. I think she was born around 1812, in Ireland but after their marriage they returned to Robert Edward's home in the Isle of Man.
Any grain of info would be great. Thanks.

Hi Jane,
Don't know if your offer is still open. If so, can you do a look-up on Bernard Arthur Craine. In 1871 he is an apprentice dispensing chemist with Thomas Stowell in Ramsey, on the Isle of Man. By his marriage in 1881 he says he is a Chemist and Druggist, still in Ramsey, on the Isle of Man. I presume as its post 1868, he would have to have qualified. Is it possible to find out when and if there is any further info on him? Really do appreciate your time. Thanks.
