Family History Beginners Board / Re: Newbie needing advice

No older members of family to ask sadly. My dad reminds me constantly he's the 'last one'. Maybe it is why his need to identify his dad has become foremost. Although it would be good to be able to fill this part of the family tree - it looks poignantly bare atm.

The twins were brought up by their grandmother and given the family stories, she would have more than likely pursued maintenance. Another obvious thing I didn't consider.  :-\

Will go look at that link, and then find out more about Quarter Sessions. Planning to go back home at end of month so hopefully can plan some visits to try and find out more.

Thanx for the incredible help

Hi Jeuel

Forgot to mention - no there's no name on the birth certificates for the father.

The location of the hearing was in Carmarthen, west Wales. My dad's memory is increasingly confused in recent years, so not sure what type of court it was - county or magistrate (maybe they were one and the same in those days (?)). My historical knowledge of various courts, etc is pitiful sorry.

I only joined here today and what a fantastic site!!! Wish I'd joined sooner.

I've been researching my family for a few years - it initially begun by wanting to help my dad find out who his father was. Meanwhile I've traced many ancestors but have never known where to begin to find my paternal grandfather (if at all possible)

My dad was one of twins, born to an unmarried mum who didn't live with the father. When my dad was about 7yrs old, around 1931, the father went to court to try and gain guardianship of my dad, his twin brother or both of them. He was unsuccessful and disappeared out of their lives again.

My father knows nothing more, as it was something never to be mentioned by his grandmother. His mum sadly, died at a young age a few years later.

I am wondering if the court records would still exist and be held somewhere for public access? I have no idea where to begin looking and hoping someone can advise me please.  Also hope I've posted this in the right place :)

The Common Room / Re: What Country is your research ?

Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Lancaster here.... on my paternal side. Also found relatives in New Zealand, and still trying to track a few down in Oz and US (cousins which I have photos of from childhood & later on, stories from 'Nam, etc but nothing factual such as places, dates).

Put to one side is another paternal line who emigrated to Ireland, because I've always been made to believe my father's side were originally Scots not Irish which has completely thrown me. And when my dad casually mentioned last week 'have you found the ones in Canada?' .. let's not go there. He wasn't kidding when he kept saying his family was 'big'  :-\

Thankfully the maternal side seems to be less globally- ambitious, are smaller families and are located in south Wales...to date anyway...just wish they weren't all seemingly Jones or Bevan. When I gave up work I thought geneology would be a pastime not a full-time mission lol.

Carmarthenshire Completed Requests / Re: 1861 Census Lookup please-Llandefeilog-JONES

How strange! I googled for a map of Llandefeilog and this thread appeared. Just as I was thinking - I really must do some more research on my family tree, especially my mum's side.

Do you know the name of Mary's actual 'home'?

I ask as I'm tracking my ancestry, but so far only got to the 1820s with my maternal family. They are Jones, still living in Idole, been there a few generations.

Even though Idole was so sparsely populated especially in the 1800s (three houses, a few farms and a couple of 'big houses' with land).. we may possibly have a family link. If not, I may have some info or can get pics for you of/from the area if you like. Off back home in a few weeks again.

Gelli Geiros is still there. The name Moelfre has gone - not used to describe the area any longer (as far as I know), although Moelfre farm still exists. Lots of boundary changes over time - it gets confusing.

I'm so stunned to see something...anything about Idole on a site let alone on an ancestry one.. I don't know what else to say lol. Hope the above makes sense.

I've just joined to reply to this thread... so off to have a look-see around the place. Hope I can find my way back here  :o
