Kent / Re: The Edwards challenge ..Tunbridge Wells/Southborough help gratefully accepted

I am even more convinced now as the 1881 census has a Sarah Edwards (age approx 83, widow) living with them.

Thank you so much! Its crazy how quickly you seem to have solved that riddle!

Im excited now as I have followed the lead of Charlotte Walter and I have found them in the 1911 census living at the Bottlehouse Inn in Penshurst where Henry Elias Edwards was also living with his wife and children at the same time.

Im trying to not get too excited and carried away just yet but given what I have seen so far I am more hopeful about finding them than I have been in about 2 years  :)

Kent / The Edwards challenge ..Tunbridge Wells/Southborough help gratefully accepted
« on: Wednesday 10 October 12 22:03 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Firstly I am always a bit confused about whether Tunbridge Wells counts as Kent or Sussex so if its in the wrong forum please let me know.

I have been trying to find some of my ancestorys for a couple of years now and some how they just appear as if by magic in the 1861 census, then disappear again!

The search began with Henry Elias Edwards born in 1864 in Southborough, Tunbridge Wells, to a Charlotte Edwards (Father unknown)

I have found a Charlotte Edwards (b 1850 Tunbridge) living a few streets away from where Henry was born in the 1861 census with her Father Richard Edwards (b 1813 in what looks like Askhurst but I assume is Ashurst?) her mother Sarah (b 1818 also Askhurst/Ashurst) and her two siblings Harriett Edwards (b 1848 Tunbridge) and William (B 1853 Tunbridge).

The family seem to appear in the 1861 census and then disappear again until I find Henry Elias Edwards in a later census married and with children.

I am desperate to find out more about them so any help would be fantastic and greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Amy

Hi

Thanks for your advice, I wasn't sure which way to go about finding out the reason why she would be at the school, I agree from your comments that the petty sessions would seem to be the easier option, given that I don't have any dates just a ten year window...and that's a lot of newspapers!

I'll also email the London Metropolitan Archives about the school, and see if there is anything there, I did try a few other places but for some reason (probably inexperience) I hadn't thought about emailing them. The school was called the Hampstead Reformatory School for Girls, it closed in 1891 which was the year Caroline was last found.

mc8 - not sure whether she is one of mine. This sibling group used both their surnames at different times. There is a possibility it could be, I haven't found Caroline since the 1891 census (when she was using the surname Haffenden)

Thanks

Amy

Her name was officially Caroline Sharwood b. 1873 Eastbourne, Sussex but by the 1891 census she was using her fathers surname of Haffenden. Her family stayed in Eastbourne until the early 1900's so assume that she would have been 'tried' if thats the right term in the area of Eastbourne.

She disappeared after the 1891 census - there was another thread trying to find her, but alas no luck! Now I am trying to build up a picture of her before she disappeared.

If any more info is needed please let me know. It would be great if anyone could save me a trip to Eastbourne, but if not then any advice about how to go about tracking down the right records would be appreciated - I'm a record office novice!

Thanks in advance  :)

Amy

Family History Beginners Board / Advice on finding out what the crime was
« on: Saturday 23 July 11 21:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I have an ancestor who was sent to a reformatory school between 1881 and 1891. I know this because in 1881 she is at home with her family in Eastbourne and in 1891, aged 19, she is in a reform school in London.

I'd really like to find out what she did to be sent to this school. I've tried to find the school to see if they have any records but it would seem that it was a small school and hardly any information or records survive. Someone mentioned that she would have been tried in a magistrates Court type setting.

What would be the best way of finding out her crime? Would it be in newspapers of the day or in court records? Whats the best way to find these? Any advice on how I can research this then I would be very grateful.

Thanks

Amy

Sussex / Re: Heathfield Haffenden Hunters ...anyone out there??

HI,

Apologies for not checking back here for a couple of days, the tail end of my working week was pretty manic.

Omega, that looks like a good find, I had wondered where she had got to in 1871!

Roy thanks for your interesting thoughts, I'm certainly not 'precious' about my ancestors, there are illegitimacies all over the shop and rather her be a lady of the night in order to feed and survive, than die without having children, or I wouldn't be here!  ;D

I have her death as 'intestinal obstruction 8 days - Parturition 4 days' I believe that means she died in child birth, which ties in with the birth of James Evenden who subsequently died shortly after his mother.

On one of the birth certificates (John's) underneath her name is 'a hawker' so imagine they were not a rich family....

I've ordered some more certificates, so I'm waiting to find out what they say, I always get excited when the certificate confirms something. I know £10 isn't really that expensive but with the amount I have to buy to firm up my ancestral beliefs it may take me a while to be able to afford it....

Interestingly I noticed that on John's death certificate his son's name is listed as Shurwood, meaning that he never fully took on his fathers surname and passed that down to his children. It is the mothers surname which has been passed down. Having had a quick look on one of my subscriptions it would seem that his children are all named Shurwood rather than Evenden/Haffenden. Even though in the 1911 census they are listed as Haffenden's....they do like to keep me on my toes! :)

Hi Omega,

Sorry but I'm not sure where Priscilla comes into it?? I have George marrying Sarah Ann in 1883 and then Elizabeth sometime later?
I've had a look at the census for 1891 and that George Evenden was born in Framfield, also from a brief look at the records available it looks as though he is another George Evenden.  Looks like George is a family name so maybe could be from another branch?

Roy - Caroline is the only one who is named solely as Caroline Sherwood... Maybe if she thought that they would get in trouble regarding her age, she decided to hide his surname. It seems as though they Caroline and George stuck together though, plus if Caroline was born at George's parent's house then maybe thats a good sign that George is the dad?

I had a look for Caroline Kent/Sherwood and Sarah Ann but so far I havent found them anywhere during their 'missing' period of time. I'll keep looking...

No trace of an Albert yet in my tangled mess of a family  :) I'll keep my eyes open for you, if you get any more info on him then let me know and I'll see what I can do.
