Family History Beginners Board / Re: Which route to take ?
« on: Thursday 21 August 14 10:06 BST (UK)  »
Thanks everyone. I appreciate your thoughts. I think I will just plod on doing what I have been doing. I am going "wide" and slowly I suppose going further back. The main thing, as you said, is to enjoy it. Thanks again.
Onwards and Upwards !! (but with me, probably Sidewards)> ;D

Family History Beginners Board / Which route to take ?
« on: Sunday 17 August 14 15:28 BST (UK)  »
I'm not a beginner but I would like some guidance.

Can someone advise me what is the best plan of action when building a family tree. Should one start with oneself, find parents (2), find their parents (4) and their parents (8) ? That way you have a very narrow tree but one which hopefully goes back many generations.

I find that I am not focused enough and tend to go very 'wide'. i.e. I tend to add all brothers and sisters, their parents brothers and sisters and I have a very large tree containing hundreds of people, many who are not that directly related. I find that with the abundance of information available online it's easily to get distracted.

Could some 'old hands' at this tell me what their method is and hopefully I will be able to decide on a strategy and stick to it.

Many thanks.

Thanks Rosie.
The Mary Cave buried 1 Dec 1859 was in fact the child of Elizabeth Cave (no father listed) and was just 12 days old. She was born 18 Nov 1859 and Baptised on the 27 Nov 1859.
It is possible that the Elizabeth Cave mentioned was the sister of the Richard Cave (1824) who is in my direct line.

Richard Cave married Mary Halsall, both from Halsall Lancs.
They moved to Cilcain/Nannerch between 1855 and 1857.
As Cilcain/Nannerch are missing from the 1861C it is difficult to say exactly where they first lived in N Wales. In 1871 and 1881 they were in Cilcain. A child, Thomas Henry was born in 1864 at Rhesycae/Cilcain. This child was to Richard and his second wife, also Mary who was born in Mold.

I am trying to confirm a couple of things :

(a) A child Mary Cave was born in Halsall in 1855. Not shown on 1861C. There are two deaths of Mary Cave's registered at Holywell, one in 1859, the other in 1860. I wonder if someone could look up the death/burial registers to see if there is any age shown and to possibly confirm if either of these deaths is the Mary born in 1855.

(b) The child previously mentioned, Thomas Henry Cave, was born in 1864. There is a death registered at Holywell in Q1 1891. I was wondering if this was the same person. I'm not sure if ages were shown in Parish Records.

I would be grateful for any help.

Many thanks.

Flintshire Lookup Requests / Re: Lebias Jones/Williams b 1841

Hi William,
Thanks for your reply.
My connection is :
Lebias had a son Simon Williams who married Sephorah Jones.
Sephorah Jones was my maternal step-grandfather (Llewellyn Jones)'s sister.

Flintshire Lookup Requests / Lebias Jones/Williams b 1841
« on: Friday 18 April 14 06:26 BST (UK)  »
I am researching Lebias. To start with, it's not easy as the spelling of his name is never consistant. Sometimes it's Lebias, Lebius, Lebbeus etc.
I have found that he was born in Ysceifiog. His birth was registered at Holywell Q1 1841. He married Mary Evans in 1864 and then lived in Cilcain. He died 1911.
His later life is fine. It is his parents that I can't find.
On the 1841C he is at Drefraith, Ysceifiog with his grandfather Edward Jones (75), grandmother Jane (70), their daughter Anne (25) and two grandchildren Joseph JONES (4) and Lebias JONES (5m).
On the 1851C he is at the same address with grandfather Edward Jones (85), his daughter Anne (35) and the 2 grandchildren now listed as Joseph PARRY (14) and Lebbeus WILLIAMS (10).
Anne is shown as unmarried.
Originally I thought Joseph and Lebias were both Anne's illegitimate children. Now seeing the names as Parry and Williams causes concern.
Hopefully a Birth Certificate for Lebias would give a clue to his parentage but Joseph was born pre BMD registration.
I have tried to find Baptisms for both children, but found nothing.
I wonder if anyone knows of this family or has access to Parish Records which may give further information on their parents.
Any help will be appreciated.
Many thanks.
Bryn Williams
