Antrim / Old Soldiers' Home in Belfast in 1850s?
« on: Monday 07 May 18 17:45 BST (UK)  »

Hello,

I have a person on my tree called John Joll.  He was born in Lanlivery, Cornwall in 1792.  He served with the 64th Regiment of Foot from 1817 to 1834.

After 1834 he is described as being an Out-Pensioner of the Chelsea Hospital.

A National Archives document of April 1852 records several ex-soldiers of 64th including John Joll as having their pensions' administration changed to “2nd Division Belfast”.

Does this mean that there was some type of old soldiers home in Belfast in 1850s?

If he was living in such a home would that mean he was unmarried or a widower?

A further record says that John Joll died on 6 March 1855 but not does say where.  If he did die in Belfast where would he have been buried?  Was there some sort of military cemetery?

Thanks.  Yes he must be.  He was a joiner by trade.  The family of the youngest daughter do not have the medal and we have lost contact with the descendants of the other 2 daughters.  So somewhere in SA is his medal - I wonder if present owner knows who "N Joll" was?!

Cornwall / Bible Christian Marriages
« on: Sunday 12 August 12 19:17 BST (UK)  »
I have never been able to prove the marriage of 2 people (Ruth Thomas to Nathaniel Joll).  Recent research has shown that Ruth was an enthusiastic member of the Bible Christians.  Looking at the chronologies of these two people, if they did get married, the most likely time, in my opinion, would have been spring 1886 and at the BC Chapel at St Just in Penwith.  However their marriage is NOT recorded by the GRO (NB I have also checked GRO Overseas).  Has anyone else had experience of BC marriages where the minister, who conducted the ceremony, failed to inform the Registrar General ie was it a common occurrence?

South Africa / Nathaniel JOLL and family

I am trying to find the confirmation of the death of a man called Nathaniel JOLL.  I think he must have died around 1903.  A senior member of the family recalls that he had a job on the building of the railway at Bulawayo and caught yellow fever.  She does not know where he was buried.  I cannot find any record of his death in the Zimbabwe Death Index.

Also his wife Ruth and 3 daughters (Mary, Ada and Dorothy) must have emigrated from Cornwall to South Africa in 1901.  I know this as I have found an auction notice which advertises the household effects for sale in Cornwall in spring 1901.  The advert states that Mrs Joll is going to Africa.  Despite much searching I cannot find Ruth Joll and daughters on any passenger list.

Can anyone help with these 2 problems?

United States of America / Re: Virginia/Ontario - the Westley family

Thank you Sandra for looking up so much info for me.  It does appear that they did in fact move to New York then Virginia then Ontario.  Indeed the 1890 Census would have been interesting if it had survived.  Thanks again.

United States of America / Virginia/Ontario - the Westley family
« on: Saturday 14 July 12 19:34 BST (UK)  »
I have on my tree a family with the surname of Westley.  If I have the right family they are farming at Rehoboth, Lunenburg, Virginia in 1880 but by 1910 they appear to be living in Ontario, Canada.  1/  Has anyone any record of the Westley family at Lunenburg for the 1880s  2/ Is it very likely a family would emigrate from Virginia to Ontario in the 1890s?
