Hi Tricia,

I’ve sent you a personal message. You can access it from the “my messages” tab at the top of the screen.

Cheers,

I am wondering if you have been able to find Greta Victoria Isobel Francis, as I have been able to and I am only too happy to share. I am researching for a friend who's elusive grandmother has been hard to find. I got her to do a DNA with Ancestry and 4-6 cousin relationship came up with the Charles Albert Francis child who married a Samuel Locke daughter and this how I am here replying to you. Cheers Tricia

Hi Tricia,

Sorry for the delay in my response. I wasn’t notified of your reply. I’ve adjusted my settings again so hopefully it won’t happen again. Funny, it only seems to happen on this thread.

I would absolutely love any information you are willing to share. I’ve searched for years with no luck. For us to use the personal message system, you will need to post twice more. Once this happens, we can exchange emails. Don’t post your email on the public forum, as it will be deleted. Your posts don’t need to have significant information; there just need to be three of them.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Alison  :)

Just a quick question:

Can someone please tell me what the letter in brackets after a place name means?
Examples - Sankt Nikolai (N) or Stora Kärret, Istorp (P) or Simrishamn (L)

Thanks,
Alison  ???

Wow, thanks ShaunJ, good find.
I had looked on Trove but with his given names rather than his initials.

Cheers,
Alison

World War Two / Getting from STALAG IXC to Barcelona in 1943

Can anyone solve my conundrum?

I have an Australian Soldier, William Derek Curtis (b. 1908) who was captured in Greece in April 1941.

https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/DetailsReports/ItemDetail.aspx?Barcode=4848706&isAv=N

He spent 5 months in Kokina Camp in Athens (according to his answers in a questionnaire regarding his captivity)
1 Dec 1941 - recorded as being in Stalag IXB (Lazarette Dieburg, Germany)
14 Aug 1943 - recorded as being in Stalag IXC (Muhlhausen, Germany)
27 Oct 1943 - embarks at Barcelona, Spain
3 Nov 1943 - recorded as being previously POW, now arrived in Eygpt.
30 Dec 1943 - embarks Eygpt, arriving in Sydney 27 Jan 1944.
He was discharged from the army on 6 Nov 1944, the reason being there was "no suitable vacancy in which his services could be employed".  His file is also stamped as being PROTECTED PERSONNEL.

My questions:
How did he get from Stalag IXC, where he was in Aug 1943 to Barcelona by Oct 1943?  I can't see anything in his file about escape, but being totally ignorant of such things, maybe it wasn't recorded.  The camp wasn't liberated until April 1945.
What does Protected Personnel mean?
