your email address has been redacted by RootsChat. Not to worry, when I have a bit more time I will start posting some of the information that I have gleaned.

Best wishes,

Joe

I finally spoke to my brother Andrew about the Leibman Leopold connection, and he supplied me with quite a lot more information. Unbeknown to me, he and my mother linked up around 1990 with a Canadian cousin of hers, John Knox (they had holidayed together as children on St Helier in the 1920s), who is another Sigmund Leopold descendant, through Sigmund and Ellen's 3rd child Theresa (Florence's sister). John Knox's wife had done rather a lot of research – almost too much to supply via RootsChat. It might be easier to post you (or Shirley) the information. Incidentally, I know of descendants in New Zealand. Florence had 3 daughters, my grandmother Elise and her sisters Norah and Avice. Avice married Geoff Parkes and their son Michael emigrated to NZ where he was (I think) a dairy farmer. Michael married Dorothy and had four children – Anne, Helen, Geoffrey and Fiona.

Best wishes…

My name is Joe Staines. Sigmund is my great-great-grandfather. He was married to Ellen West. Their daughter Florence was the 2nd wife of George Spawton Catlow and the mother of three girls, including my grandmother Elise Catlow. Elise's first husband was Harry Letts and they had 3 children including my mother Pauline Letts. I am her youngest son by her husband Geoffrey Staines. My brother Andrew thinks he might have more material about the Leopolds, I will let you know if anything turns up.

Best wishes.

I don't know when Florence died, but will investigate further and let you know what I find. What relation is Shirley to Lewis, Sigmund and Babette?

Best wishes.

Yes, she was his second wife. I am pretty certain they were still together in 1901. They had a cottage at Kibworth near Leicester. It may be that Florence was there and that George was at his brother-in-law's (his sister's husband's place) at the time the census was filled in. The sad part is that Florence was sectioned in 1907 and spent the rest of her life in an asylum. This was a bit of family histyory that, needless to say, none of her immediate relatives were keen to talk about. I found out from my mother about twenty years ago, but the details are rather shrouded in mystery.

My mother's maternal grandmother was Florence Liebman Leopold (daughter of Sigmund and niece of Lewis). Florence married George Spawton Catlow, my great-grandfather, who was an artist (mostly watercolour landscapes). They lived in Leicester.
