England / Re: Frederick Allen b Bradford on Avon 1835 ish
« on: Monday 14 September 15 15:25 BST (UK)  »
He was my maternal great-grandfather. My aunt, Phyllis Parkinson (nee Garrett), said of him "Frederick Allen had a violent temper and his children were afraid of him; his first wife's children were denied everything, even their mother's jewellery was given to their half-sisters. Nevertheless, my mother, Louise, had strong relationships with her half sisters. She (Phyllis) did not know why the Allen family were so eccentric but wondered whether it was the result of Frederick Allen's Victorian repression or the unsettled background of litigation in which he was always indulging.  Apparently all his children were afraid of him and his violent temper - he used to throw his dinner across the room if it was served on a cracked plate".

I have attached my aunt's document on the Allens and also a photo of Frederick Allen.

I'd be interested in anything you turn up on Frederick - perhaps you'll find he wasn't as bad as my aunt painted him!

You're right, he was an exceptional officer and his Times Obituary supports that. I will pass on your suggestions about the IWM but I think that he has documentary evidence that the medals (and a photograph album) were sent to the RA Museum. He is unamused that the Museum apparently has no trace of either.

Thanks for that. I have found him in a number of places - CWGC, London Gazette etc. His grandson is trying to find out where his medals are; they were given to the RA Museum by his father but they have no record of them. I suspect it'll be very difficult to trace them.

Armed Forces / Re: Indian Army List

They were subordinate to the British officers. The numbers of British officers may seem high but the Indian Army - not sure which period you're investigating - had rather more battalions per regiment than the British Army. Moreover, some officers would have been employed on the staff and others would have been on long leave back in UK.  The Royal Ghurka Rifles which has two battalions in the current British Army has a smilar system to that I described in my first reply. Nowadays, some Ghurkas are commissioned as British officers, through Sandhurst and others are from the ranks and called Queen's Commissioned Officers. The chap you are researching may have been a quartermaster if he was an ex-British soldier. I am not an expert but have some knowledge through an interest in military history and having served in the British Army for 30 odd years or so.

They were Viceroy's Commissioned Officers. An Indian Army unit - like a battalion - had very few British Officers. The Commanding Officer and the company commanders, the adjutant and a platoon commander per company would have been British; the remaining officers would be Indian. They held ranks, in the infantry, such as Subedhar (the senior Indian Officer in the battalion and the CO's Indian adviser and jemadar, normally platoon commanders. The cavalry had different titles.

Ian

Do you have Allen ancestors? I ask because my aunt told me that one of her great aunts, Emmie, retired with her husband (Harry but don't know surname) to NZ. What she wrote is fascinating, especially on their eccentricity.

The 1851 Census for Garton on the Wolds, East Riding of Yorkshire, records Thomas Greenwood, born about 1798 in Guernsey. Grateful for any information on him and his family before he moved to Garton, where he was in 1841.
