Europe / Re: Place called Pelaw in the Baltic area
« on: Tuesday 12 June 18 08:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi Davecapps,

This is great-thankyou. I did suspect Pelaw was spelt phonetically on the MI but a Google search of modern day Baltic ports drew a blank. Pillau/Pilawa looks to be the likely candidate. Lloyd's List has plenty of merchant ships to and from this port.

Europe / Place called Pelaw in the Baltic area
« on: Monday 11 June 18 14:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Is there someone who can answer this question? According to MI's at St Mary's in Whitby, I have an ancestor who drowned at Pelaw in the Baltic area in Apr 1839. He was quite possibly in the Merchant Navy but records before 1845 are not 100%. However, no such place currently exists. It is not Pelaw in Gateshead, I have checked that out thoroughly. Also, it appears there is not a port/place with a similar name either.
Any ideas appreciated! I've tried looking for an atlas from the early 19th C but local libraries/archives do not have one.

Ireland / can anyone recommend an Ireland-based researcher?
« on: Wednesday 16 November 11 16:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I've researched English and Scottish ancestors quite thoroughly but am stumped when it comes to figuring out the Irish roots. I have considered travelling to Ireland myself to research but think it might be cheaper and easier to hire someone to do the work for me.

Can anyone recommend a reliable, reasonably priced, Ireland-based genealogist who can help me out with birth and marriage records in Dublin/Cork and also Co Tyrone?

Many thanks in advance,

Molly

Europe / gibraltar birth records c1812
« on: Wednesday 05 January 11 16:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Does anyone know of where to look for birth records in Gilbraltar c1812? The name at her time of marriage (in Liverpool) was Manger which sounds English.
Am I best checking for naval personel instead?

Many thanks,

Molly

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: Northallerton look up please
« on: Wednesday 16 June 10 15:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi Carol,

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply-I haven't used this site for some time. I drew a blank with this one really. I tried Liverpool archives, the central library, various internet sites etc and there doesn't appear to be any records existing. I can only assume that when the home was torn down (or bombed-not sure which) the records were destroyed as well. I don't even know for sure what might have happened to my ancestor that was at the home.

Good luck!

Shropshire / apprentice records for veterinary's
« on: Wednesday 18 November 09 12:13 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone  please point me in the right direction to find any apprentice records for vets in the 1800's? Also would this include country vets or would they simply start working without any proper training?

Many thanks,

Molly

Shropshire / school records for west felton
« on: Wednesday 21 October 09 17:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've just discovered that an ancestor was the schoolmaster for the school in West Felton in Shrops (I'm assuming the school there now is the same one!)

Can anyone shed a light on where any records may have been kept from about 1875?

Kind regards,

Molly

Lancashire / employment records for bailiffs
« on: Friday 22 May 09 08:57 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have an idea where I could search for records of bailiffs in Prescot c1851? I don't know whether this would be a court-appointed position or a private bailiff (for a wealthy landowner etc).

Many thanks,

Molly
