Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Re: HATCH & WOOD in Sheppey
« on: Monday 13 September 10 07:22 BST (UK)  »
Hello again Gemini,

Sorry - I saw your message first, so I've half-replied to your question!

My Jane Swinyard was born in Faversham in 1796 and died in Faversham in 1869.  Thanks to Casalguidi, I now know that she married John (Sampson) Hughes in 1816 and was born Jane Catt, so she's definitely not the same as your Jane Swinyard after all.  But I still can't understand why Abigail and Katherine Hatch were living with my Jane and her husband William in 1861.  Maybe it's just a complete coincidence and these Hatch sisters are nothing to do with your ancestors... ???

Best wishes,
RromHughes

Hello Casalguidi,

Many thanks for that.  That is really useful confirmation (and it is *my* Jane!).  I'd discovered anecdotally that William Henry Swinyard and Jane married in Faversham in June 1824, but I hadn't found any confirmation of that until your posting today!
The problem is, I knew that Jane had to have been Jane Hughes at some stage, as she and William Swinyard's children all styled themselves "Hughes Swinyard" (which usually suggests either that the parents weren't formally married or one or both were of Gypsy origin).  But I don't know whether Hughes was her maiden name or the name of a previous husband.  My 2x great grandfather Stephen (Jane's son) was simply Stephen Hughes, but he lived with the Swinyards (and there wasn't that much of an age gap between him and the Swinyards' eldest child).  On Stephen's marriage certificate his father is given as John Hughes, but I'm not convinced that he ever existed!

Sincere thanks again for your much appreciated help!

Hello Gemini,

I know that you posted this message re:Agnes Hatch a long time ago now, but I've only just come across it in my own family tree research!
You mention that you think that Daniel Parker Hatch's wife may have been Jane Swinyard.  Jane Swinyard was my 3x great grandmother, and I don't think that she was married to Daniel, but it is true that an Abigail and a Katherine Hatch were living with Jane and her husband William Henry Swinyard in Faversham, Kent in 1861.  According to the census the Hatch sisters' relationship to the head of the household was 'mace', which I'd always assumed was a mistranscription of 'niece', so perhaps Jane was Daniel's sister.  If so, that would be a big help to me, as I've never been able to establish Jane Swinyard's maiden name!
I'd be grateful for any confirmation you might have one way or the other.
Best wishes,
RromHughes

Travelling People / The Hughes Swinyards of Kent
« on: Friday 20 August 10 19:10 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,
I'm researching my Romani ancestors and have hit a brick wall, so wondered whether anyone has come across some of the same people in their own family histories.
My great great great grandmother, Jane Swinyard (formerly Jane Hughes of Faversham, Kent, born around 1796) apparently married William Henry Swinyard (also living in Faversham) some time in the 1820s, but despite searching through all sorts of possibilities I can't find any record of their marriage.  I know from other sources that the Romanichal people didn't always register marriages officially, and that their sons often used their father's and mother's surnames.  Two of Jane's and William's sons were Thomas Hughes Swinyard and George Hughes Swinyard.  My great great grandfather Stephen Hughes (born around 1820 in Faversham) lived with William and Jane Swinyard and eight other travellers (one other named Hughes, one named Catt and the others Swinyard or Hughes Swinyard) in 1841.
If anyone else has found a marriage date for Jane and William Swinyard or has any of these people in their family tree, I'd love to hear from them!
T'aven baxtale!

Many thanks indeed for your helpful reply, Arthur!

Your pointing out that the term 'restaurant' would be unlikely to appear on the 1841 census prompted me to scrutinise again the barely legible handwriting on the copy that I have of the relevant page, and it does in fact appear to say "At side of Preston St.".  There are well over 40 people listed as living "at side of Preston St." in Faversham in 1841.  For over a year I'd thought it said "restaurant"...

Stephen Hughes is listed, aged 20, as a tobacconist, just below the family of William and Jane Swinyard, with whom he was living in a house in Preston Street by 1851.  He was still in Preston Street (but in a different house) in 1861.

I shall contact you direct, as you kindly suggest.
Thanks again.

Travelling People / Stephen Hughes and Jane Swinyard from Faversham

I'm looking for help to find out whether my great great grandfather Stephen Hughes, born around 1820 in Faversham or Canterbury was Rom or a member of a different traveller community.

According to the 1841 UK census he was living with a number of other travellers (Roma?) "at the side of a restaurant" in Faversham, Kent with his sister Jane.  He sold tobacco.  By 1851 he was living at 33 Preston Street, Faversham with his stepfather William Swinyard and (presumably) his mother Jane Swinyard.  At that time he was a "general dealer".

I'd be grateful for any help that anyone can offer.

Parikerav tumen!
