Essex / Re: Locating a registry office
« on: Tuesday 22 January 13 19:14 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know if there is a way of finding out which registration districts covered which villages once the General Register of Births Marriages & Deaths was formed in 1837?  Specifically I'm looking for someone born in Tollesbury, in Essex, but it's the usual case of a common first name & a surname that can be spelt at least 3 different ways.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Lady N

Try Maldon:

Can't help with Windows Wave itself but Audacity is excellent - and free! I've used it for transferring audio tape to mp3 and recording Radio broadcasts.

The Common Room / Re: Postem's on FreeBMD

Great link, must remember to check periodically. I'm surprised at how many are corrections, surely it would be better to submit the correction to FreeBMD and have them update the entry?

Anyway, I have put details of some of my certificates into postems but not all, so thanks for the reminder.

FreeBMD's policy is only to accept corrections if the original transcriber made an error when transcribing. Even then, it still requires the transcriber to agree with the correction. Any errors in the original source will remain - that's why one will find a number of corrections shown in postems.

Family History Beginners Board / Double registration of birth
« on: Wednesday 08 August 12 08:53 BST (UK)  »
All are living so no names used.

I was checking registration details of a birth since 1984 and accidentally entered the mother's maiden name as the family name - the birth appeared:

John Jones mother's maiden name Jones

I knew the parents were definitely married having seen the marriage details so searched again with the family name and that also appeared:

John Smith mother's maiden name Jones

Absolutely no doubt that both are the same person as the child's unusual set of forenames only appear twice in 170 years - same quarter, same district, same page! - and the surnames in both cases are unusual

Any idea how or why this could have happened?

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Simkiss

That's spot on is that jjen and trish for some reason my grandmothers maiden name had completely left my mind but thats it, have tried talking to family but no one ever seems to know or want to say anything so makes life kinda hard to find anything out :( the only other part I do know is that my dads side (simkiss part) his father came from Birmingham but that's all I know don't even know his name, can be annoying but my family just don't like talking bout things like this

If you lookup your father's birth on FreeBMD you will find his mother's maiden name.

Checking for a Simkiss and mother's maiden name marriage finds one in Bradford for 1949

Checking that Simkiss birth in the period 1900-1933, gives only one matching forenames and that is born in Birmingham, 1926.

HTH.

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Betty E Elliott - missing death

The transcriber has made a mistake as it is clearly Elliott on the original index. I have sent a correction to FreeBMD.

Stan

So had I! Obviously, all the ELLIOTT entries on that scan have been mistranscribed as ELLIOT.

Thanks again.

Thanks, Stan!

That's definitely her as I guess she was taken to hospital in Maidstone and died there - I was born in Maidstone myself and lived in Snodland until I was 4.

I've now found out why I couldn't find it on FreeBMD - the transcriber for the scan it appears on seems to have started at ELLIS and missed out all of the ELLIOTTs as none of them show up in a search.

Family History Beginners Board / Betty E Elliott - missing death
« on: Monday 23 July 12 09:30 BST (UK)  »
Betty E Elliott was my aunt. Betty (Not Elizabeth) was born in Wandsworth on 8 November 1913 to Henry Stanley Elliott and Ada Ruth Elsie Elliott (Peters) - can be found on FreeBMD.

My late mother, her youngest sister, was born on 31 May 1921 and Betty was killed in a house fire at their home in Snodland a few weeks after that. My grandparents' wedding was registered in Malling (Kent) and the other five children after Betty were all registered there, including one after her death, so I assume Betty's death ought to be there too.

The only record we have of Betty is what is recorded in the family bible as all of that generation are dead.

I've not been able to find any Elliott anywhere in England and Wales that will fit the death details as known.

Anyone help in tracking her down?
