Thanks for adding more valuable information on the Crawford's of Limavady...... My original research involved a male and family that came to St. John New Brunswick Canada.....but it is important to have all the threads of various members to paint a full picture of where this long standing clan ended up!!

Wouldn't write them off as "not there" just yet. That census was just for a very small towns area and didn't include those living on farms or estates or various other pieces of the village.

In general, what we are discovering from the DNA of a lot of people in this region: a good many are very ancient Britains aka Brythonic Celts and have lived in the region or close by probably for the last 3,000 years or so.

The surname New has it's earliest known writing in Somerset: which is very close.  "Atten Ew" =New or At the Yew Tree.......meaning someone who lived near a Yew Tree: such trees being found around churches because they were considered to have great spiritual meaning.

Well I am sure we are kinfolk........My Thomas b.c. 1809 who married Mary Martin 1807 or so: migrated to New Brunswick Canada......he claimed to be a Methodist.....and the first Methodist meeting house was erected in 1773 in Limavady......or only about 35 years before he was born.  Thus I feel his father must have been one of the original members of this "new" sect.

Thoughts?

Hello Everyone from Canada!

About this Toomers Census: is it strictly the people who lived right in the town of Newbury? or are any of the surrounding estates mentioned?

I am knocking myself out trying to track down Joseph FOSTER who married Elizabeth COOPER.must have been around 1775 ish.....and lived up at Summerhurst Green: which I take is somewhere between Newbury and Thatcham.......although their son: Jonathon b. 1778 and his wife Mary.........who had two daughters: Jane and Charlotte who eventually moved to London would say they were from Newbury.

I take it thats just because that was the closest town rather than a true fact??

I would be happy to purchase the Toomer Cd if I could even do a keyword search to see if the surname Foster is in it.........but that doesnt seem possible.

Any guidance here?

Carlow / Re: Griffith family in Carlow: and Murphy
« on: Tuesday 12 February 13 22:49 GMT (UK)  »
Well let me add my Griffith search:.........

My ancestor: DANIEL GRIFFITH b. 1817 migrated to St. John NB around 1850/51

He brought with him wife MARY CATHERINE MURPHY and twins 2 yrs of age: PATRICK and I think Ann.....or Mary Jane

Family lore says he was from CARLOW......but no evidence to support this

I do take note the surname spelled as GRIFFITH is prevalent in the Carlow region moreso than the rest of Ireland with the exception of perhaps Derry.....GRIFFEN is far more often seen in the other regions.

so I am going to guess the family didnt come by this idea of Carlow by accident: and that if true: Daniel must be related to the men listed on the Griffiths valuation left behind; since he had just left recently

Any of this information ring true to anyone? Or if anyone runs past a reference to a Daniel: eager to hear

I do note the Murphy family was very visible in this region as well

PS: Lucky for me: I am communicating with a person who is actually living on the Ballyhanna lands today!  He is doing some back searching to see what he can find out about William noted on the Griffiths as living there.

Ok good: even more information to work with.

Do you have more information on the Crawford lineage then?

Correction:

Thomas and MARGARET Martin migrated to St. John New Brunswick Canada in 1850 not 1840

We have in the 1853 Griffiths report:

William living at Ballycrum (where we find in 1766 a Thomas living)
Robert living at Drumaderry

We know Thomas was born 1809: and is included in the 1831 Census: (if this is not his father)
living in Anghaloo

By
1869: we have a Thomas marrying a Catherine Henry
and
1870: we have William marrying a Susannah Hunter: Unitarians: William is listed as a merchant and his father is listed as Joseph: Gentleman......

We note a Joseph from Limavady migrated to Philadelphia in 1835 I believe........

1740: all we have in Limavady is a Mrs. Crawford: presume she must be a widow

1910: we find Samuel there as a Clerk of the Union

Lots of bits and pieces to try and put together: presumably made harder as the Crawfords of Limavady didnt belong to mainstream Church of Ireland or Presbyterian churches in the early days at least...........sourcing those type of dissenter records should be a challenge.

Well fair enough: suffice it to say: its one very small aggregate......either one family or a few

I don't think any of these Crawfords owned any of these but were Cottiers/Cotters: just living/working on the properties.

Would that seem reasonable?
