Staffordshire / John Thomas Owens - Train driver
« on: Monday 25 August 14 17:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am currently looking for any information about my Great Uncle John Thomas Owens who was a train driver for Great Western Railway.

My Great Uncle was the brother of my Grandad William Owens and my other Great Uncle James Owens. I have been able to find out all about James and my Grandad William but the trial for John Thomas has gone cold so to speak.

I know he was a train driver for GWR and was based at the Oxley Shed in Wolverhampton and I know that he was definitely at this shed from March 1924 and was still there in November 1942 according to his staff records.

I think he preferred to go by the name of Tom and was born to Robert and Mary Owens on the 24.12.86 in Salford Manchester. He had a daughter named Irene who also lived in Wolverhampton but I don't know who he married or when, but his daughter Irene must have been born before 1940 according to the information that I have found.

Sometimes the surname has been spelt incorrectly as Owen when it should have been Owens in some of the records that I have come across and I have also go an address for a house in York Avenue in Finchfield Wolverhampton, but I don't know if this is where they lived or not.

Does anyone know anything that could help me with my search for John Thomas, or point me in the right direction to try and find out more, I'm already using Ancestry.co.uk.

Many thanks

Rhian

Thanks for your reply Maryd.

I know for definate that my Dad was a twin as we have the stillborn certificate that's how we found out the twin was a boy. I needed to make sure the twin story was correct so I wasn't  researching a red hearing

Hi,

Thanks for your message.

I have managed to get hold of the death certificate and the poor thing wasn't given a first name, it was a boy and his surname was Owens, he was born in the Ruabon district.

My Dad doesn't know what happened to his twin so I suspect as there is no mention of the stillborn twin on my Taid and Nains headstone that the baby would have been buried in a mass grave.

I have just come across your post, I have relatives with the name of Humphreys and wondered if there was any kind of link.

My Nains maiden name was Humphreys, she had 2 sisters called Margaret and Elouneod and their parents where John and Marys Humphreys.

My Nain died on 13th FEbruary 1962.

Hi,

I am looking for an obitury of my Taid who passed away in January 1950 - was the Wrexham Leader around at that time as I am thinking that is where the obitury would have been placed.

Any help would be appreciated

Many thanks for your replies and information I have contacted Llangollen Railway and my Taids information has been past onto the historians to look up as he was supposed to have been driving the train that went into Sun Bank in 1945 sadly killing the driver

Occupation Interests / William Owens - Ruabon to Barmouth Railway engine driver
« on: Saturday 24 July 10 20:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to research my Taid (Grandfather) William Owens, who was a engine driver on the Ruabon to Barmouth line approx 1940 until 1950, he could have started earlier on this line but I don't have enough information to confirm this.

Does anyone know anything about this line and which trains were used - perhaps there are people out there that might remember my Taid.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Rhian

Hi,

I am new to family research and wondered if anyone could help with a query I have about my Dads twin.

Apparently my Dads twin died at birth, I have checked for a death certificate but can't find one even though I know the exact date and names of both parents. As there isn't a death record I am assuming that the twin was stillborn and I don't know where to go to get a record of this - the twin was born in 1942.

Can anybody help please?

Many thanks

Rhian
