Hello Bookbox,
Many thanks for your efforts.  I should have said that I found it odd that he did not appear on more than the 1901 census.  I really appreciate that you found him on the 1911 census, and yes, I am sure it is him, despite the change of name, country of birth and occupation.
Thanks again

Hello Claire,
Thank you for your help.  Sadly I think I must be looking for a different Paul Schafer.  Today I have found a press item (ALIEN FROM HUDDERSFIELD) from The Huddersfield Daily Examiner which gave his age in 1919 as being 50 years.  In court he claimed that he had served in the British Army and that his son had served with the First Expeditionary Force.  He said his own father had been a Russian Pole, and that he himself had been born in Germany.  Finally he claimed that he had lived the life of an Englishman for 30 years - so from around 1889.  I find it odd that he does not pop up in the census.
The search continues ...

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Paul Schafer (Schaefer) Musician, living in Huddersfield?
« on: Saturday 15 March 14 19:07 GMT (UK)  »
On the 2nd of April 1919, The Yorkshire Post carried a news item - German's visit to Scarborough.  German born Paul Schafer was said to have entered the prohibited area of Scarborough in order to fulfil an engagement at a Picture House.  The Chief Constable of Scarborough said that due to a mistake on the part of a police sergeant in Huddersfield, Schafer was given a permit to go to Scarborough.  So far I have failed to find this man living in Huddersfield.  I don't know his age, but he is said to have a son serving during WW1, with the British Troops at Mons.  The son is thought to be called Carl/Paul or Paul Carl Schafer.  So far I have not managed to find father or son living in Huddersfield, although the father is supposed to live there from 1889.  Any help/suggestions would be welcomed.

Almondbury All Hallows was the Mother Church for the area.  It is reasonably common for records to be shown twice.  Slaithwaite St James is a mere skip down the road from Linthwaite.  I wonder if Hole House was what now is known as Hoyle House?   Good luck with the search.

Many thanks for your various suggestions.  I was aware of the Milnsbridge one and one down by the University, but have read recently that another Drill Hall was established at the top end of town in the Springwood area.  I have not used the WW1 rootschat, so will post on that, and also nip into the Local Studies Library.  Thanks again.

Just a brief request for help - during WW1, does anyone know how many Drill Halls there were in Huddersfield?
Many thanks in advance.

Uppermill and the other Saddleworth villages are part of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham.  53% of the Oldham Borough is in Yorkshire, and 47% is in Lancashire. In the most recent past signs confirming the above have been erected on the boundaries of the Saddleworth villages. They are pale blue in colour, feature a white rose and the name of each village.  It is some years since I visited Helmshaw and recall the cotton production.  I was not aware that they now include woollen, although it is quite a trip from Huddersfield and the Colne and Holme valleys.

Saddleworth Museum in the Yorkshire village of Uppermill about 8 minutes by car from Marsden.  The Lancashire one suggested could be Helmshore (Cotton).
