Hi Kevin,

YES I would love to know more, just in case it helps me solve my puzzle! And you never know, we may share some common ancestors! Have you read my posts in detail yet (including the link to the other thread?)

Trying to piece together the information from your post, With what I think I have worked out previously.
Thomas Raffell & Mary Ann Spicer where the parents of Jane Raffell, who married Charles Dodson. In 1851 this couple (Charles & Jane) have Sarah Smithers, b 1846, staying with them and she is listed as "cousin"

Sarah Smithers was the daughter of Robert Smithers & Caroline Arters. Caroline was the daughter of John Arters & Sarah Spicer. Is it possible that Sarah Spicer was the sister of Mary Ann do you think???
Robert Smithers was the daughter of Thomas Smither & Grace?, both born in Cobham I think so I think it less likely that if there is a releationship, it is on that side.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts

I have been trying to find the ancestors of Henry Croucher b about 1813 in Hampshire. (he is my ggggrandfather)

I have found him on the 1851 census on wards and his birth place is listed as 1851 - Grinham, Hants,  1861 - Surrey?  1871 - Hemshott (sic) Hants,  1881 - Greathan, Hants, 1891 - Greathan Hants.
He died in Kingston Upon Thames in 1893 age 79.

I have tried to find him on the 1841 census in Hampshire with no success. I can't (yet) find any sign of the Croucher family in Greatham Hants on the 1841 census.  I have no idea who his parents are. Has anyone any ideas???

Where can I look now?  As i live in Chester, it is unlikely that I will get to look at the parish registers in Hampshire in the near future.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Pauline

Can anyone give me a clue as to how I go about finding out about someone who was a soldier in 1851. (on the 1851 census Edward HOLLINGDALE b abt 1826 Sussex is listed as a private in a Barracks St George Hanover Sq. ) I know that in 1871 his children are at the Royal Partriotic Asylum for Boys Wandsworth Common and the  District Royal Victoria Patriotic Asylum for Girls, Wandsworth- which I believe were set up as a shcool for the children of soldiers. He died in 1866.

Any ideas?

Wow!!!!

You've brought tears to my eyes. As far as we knew the ship he was on was sunk - but this tells the true story I suppose.

Thank you so much

Hi Again,

I have just been comparing information from his service record with some info about the HMS Aurania, which was the last name mentioned before the PEmbroke. The Aurania was torpedoedo on 21 October 1941, which was the last day he was recorded as been on that ship.

Maybe this was the ship he was on when he ended up in the sea, and was taken prisoner......

World War Two / Pembroke - Ship sunk ww2 by German U boats?

My granddad was in a ship sunk probably about 1941-1942 by a german U boat. He was then interred at Marlag U Milag POW camp prisoner no. 321, He was repatriated May 1944 because of Age and Ill health.

According to his Navy service record, he was serving on the Pembroke, but I can;t find a record of its sinking on the internet. He spent quite a while in the water before he was picked up, (I have attached photos of his rescue by the Germans) and apparently exchanged christmas cards with the captain of the U boat until his death in 1959.

I am really struggling to find anything about the ship sinking, exactly when, where etc.
any help would be very much appreciated.

I have found my ancestors Edward & Mary Ann Florence in both the 1841 & 1851 censuses. but by 1861 they have vanished.

on the 1851 census Edward Florence is  39, occupation Coach Trimmer, Born Wawickshire.
Mary A Florence is 39, born (what looks like)Hartfordshire. They live at 4 Holland Retreat, Lambeth, with children Chas (my 2nd great grandfather) age 14, Mary A 12 b Bloomsbury, William7, born Camberwell, Edward4 born Camberwell and Harriott age (I think) 4 months. born Lambeth.

I know where Charles is for all the census returns but I just can;t find any sign of the others. (I have been through all the BMD death records for the name Florence and none of them appear to have died between 1851 & 1861

Can anyone help?

Thanks :)
