Good morning

You really are so kind :)

I think you may be correct re John - he was 19 when George was born if we are indeed on the right tracks. The reason I think that this is the correct family is that we were definately cobblers/shoemakers and these people are listed on the census as bootmakers or shoemakers. Latterly we were laundrymen - oh the glamour!!! I have a cousin in his 70's who has told me as many of the family stories that he can remember. When he was younger, he had an evening when he invited all the elderly family to dinner to hear their stories and wrote them all down. It feels like I have meat on the bomes of the tree if you know what I mean

That said I have printed off the information you have given me and ordered the certificate - we need facts as well as stories exagerated over time!!!!!

Best wishes

Good evening

Thank you for the link which I hadn't seen. Daft as it probably sounds to you, I didn't think of sending for the marriage certificate in fact I had forgotton that the father's name would be on there. I will send off for that and hopefully I can move forward. :)

I really appreciate you taking the time to reply - thank you

Kent / The Sayer Family St John's Margate

Good evening

One year on and I am still stuck with the Sayers of Margate

I have sorted out George Sayer (1831) to the present but going backwards is proving difficult

This is what I have thus far:

George Sayer born 1831 Margate married to Mary Ann Nichols
Have searched all over and can't find recorded evidence of his birth although I know this to be the case from the census records

Father - Possibly John Sayer 1811 (sumised from 1841 census) christened 13.10.1811 died 13.07.1841
Can't find any marriage records that fit

Grandmother Mary Bently (also summised from 1841 and 1851 census)  Grandfather George Sayer
According to the 1851 census Mary was born near Canterbury and there is a marriage for George Sayer and Mary Bently from Fordwich at st John's in 1804 Also Johns Baptismal record sites George and Mary as parents

I can't find birth records for either Mary or George senior

I have worked through the available on line records from St John's but nothing fits. I have scoured familysearch but again turned up a blank.

Any help with filling in the blanks or resources that would help me would be much appreiciated

Thank you

Lizzie

Kent Lookup Requests / St John's Margate post 1792 christening
« on: Tuesday 24 July 12 16:27 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the records of the christening for George Sayer born 1831 Margate. I only have access to the online records and live in Manchester. Potential Father John Sayer but that is summation from the census records.

I would be very grateful for any help

Thank you very much

Kent / Re: Mercy Solly Margate St Johns

Good evening

Update

I have today established that John and Mercy Sayer were partners with Benjamin Beale in his bathing machine company in Margate. I found an old business card of theirs from 1791 and My cousin has old documents from a business he purchased in Marine Terrace that site John Sayer as a tennant of Mr Beale in 1773 which includes a pencil scrawled drawing of the baths - how amazing is that!!!! - what a coincidence that he should purchase a business in the same building almost 250 years later which is when he aquired the old deeds.

However in order to ensure this is the correct family I need to place these 2 as definately the parents of George Sayer who married Mary Bently - which I believe them to be based on what I gleaned from the parish records 2 days ago. The John and Mercy from Margate had 9 children that I could find. There are only 2 marrriages for John Sayer and  a Mercy in Kent that I can find for this period and only 1 of those is in Margate......Any help in proving or indeed disproving my 'romantic assumptions' (strongly based in research of course :)) would be much appreciated

Thank you

Good morning

Thank you for that. I have allready located a will for Mercy sayer in Margate - lets see if I can tie that in. I have also found a John Sayer born in Canterbury for about the right time - he is the only 1 born in Kent for the right time period - however we are are back to supposition as opposed to evidence  :)

Kent / Mercy Solly Margate St Johns
« on: Saturday 30 July 11 21:58 BST (UK)  »
Good evening

I have been working on my family tree today and have been working through the Margate St Johns parish records. It appears that I am descended from Mercy Solly and John Sayer however I am at a loss as to how to move any further as there are 2 records that could potentially be the parents of my Mercy. My options are Richard and Mary Solly with a dob of 9th March 1735 and John and Mary Solly with a dob of 1oth November 1745 (and maybe others that I have missed or don't have access to )

Mercy married John Sayer in Margate on 21st June 1767 so my feeling is that John and Mary would be most likely as that would have her married at22 and their first child, also Mercy, born a year later. However I have learnt that I have made several errors by going on 'my feeling' so am asking if any one has any information on this branch of the Solly family that they would be prepared to share with me.

I am also completely at a dead end for the parents of John Sayer as I can find no birth or baptismal record for him. Any suggestions anyone?  :)

Thank you for taking the time to read my post
