I am surprised to receive replies to my post 10 years on. I have found out much more about Eva since the vague information my dad told me many years ago. I had found the Times report about her murder but it was great seeing a more upto date photo of her in the Mirror. So thank you for that information. Thank you Hepburn for the link to the book about Murder Houses of South London. Although very interesting it was difficult reading. The author had their own take on what happened. Eva was my great aunt and a loved member of the family, she followed her dream of wanting to be a dancer and headed off to London to pursue her dream - probably like many other young girls. It didnt work out but she never forgot her family and would send home presents to her nieces and nephews (including my dad). I have a couple of beautiful photos but not sure about sharing them without knowing how to protect their use?

Hello, my late nan Violet Waring (was Porter) also told me stories of Eva being an actress and sending gifts at Christmas. I believe Ruby was the 13 year old daughter whose party it was.  :)
Hi Jo, it was me (your cousin Jill Porter) who started this thread and only just looked at Rootschat again and saw your post as there seemed to be a sudden interest in my questions after 10 years! I have found out so much more as all I had to start with was my dads vague recollection as he would have only been 7 years old when Eva was murdered. Infact he was confused and thought Eva was called Ruby then I found out Ruby was her daughter. I have been in touch with Rubys family and if you ever want more info I think you have my email. Hope you and your family are well . Jill

Lancashire / Re: Manchester area 1794 why would Marines be in the area?

Hi Cousin - Edward Porter is my 4x GGF my line is from his son James. I have been asking all the same questions about Edward and the connection between Blackley and Coventry as the others sons born in Coventry then go back to Blackley to marry etc. James goes the opposite way moving from Manchester to Coventry to weave Ribbons. The comments about there being marines in manchester is very interesting and would be great to see if there is any more info.

I am also curious about Edward's birth as there are a number of possibilities - i favoured the one in Plymouth son of a soldier as I thought military background plus right area to join in Portsmouth. Why do you think the Hereford birth?
Sorry I haven't replied to you earlier as haven't look on here for a long time.
A researcher checked Edward Porters army records for me in the National Archives and his record said he was from Much Dewchurch, Herefordshire and he enlisted in Hereford in March 1780 aged 25 years. There is a bit of a description of him if you are interested?

hi Louisa Maud
Sarahs husband was buried in Stanground,Peterborough and she moved to London to live with one of their daughter after his death - i cant imagine they could afford to ship her body back. i imagine she'd be buried locally to  Hammersmith i just need to know the name of the local municipal burial ground so i can contact them. Thank you for the reply.

The idea he was recruiting sounds possible. He didnt leave the Marines until 1814 and didnt stay in Manchester as their first son was christened in Warrington 10 months later. Probably the Marines were stationed in Warrington?. His wife Alice seemed to move to Coventry by the time their next 2 sons were born in 1804 & 1808. Have no idea why but only can presume a weaving connection. Edward was still in this Marines during this time so must have been on active duty although havnt been able to discover where/what the 23 division of Portsmouth division were doing?
