Found her in 1881 in Chelmsford with the family - gives her place of birth as Martham!  Off to check.

thankyou karenlee - I have just looked back having finished wandering around the ludham archive site (what a brilliant site - if only all villages did that!) - and I too have found that one - I think she looks most likely.

I'm not sure...

One of their sons Robert was born 1861/2 in Ludham - I think.  He was in Chelmsford by 1881.

Hi,

I am foraying back into the family research having been handed another section of tree by a relative.  But I'm stuck.

I have Sarah Ann Ruffell as my great great grandmother.  b. around 1835.  Apparently in Ludham Norfolk - I live nearby and have a third cousin staying, so we were going to visit - but research throws up no Ruffells there, none in the graveyard - no history at all.

On a later census with her husband (William Welham b 1839 Barking) it shows her place of birth as Ludham, Norfolk quite clearly.   (My trail is her daughter Bertha Welham who is my great grandmother b 1867 Ipswich Suffolk.)  He was born in Suffolk, but their first three children were born in Norfolk, so she may have come from there.

I don't even know where to start looking I'm afraid - could someone point me in the right direction please?

aha!  It appears William Welham and Sarah Ann Ruffell got married in 1859 at Stow in Suffolk...

The 1841 census shows a Charles Moore aged 30, estimated year of birth 1811 who was living at Mile End Heath, Second Ward Colchester.

He was living with Mary and is listed as an agricultural labourer.

I have nothing on James and Abigail at all.  That's where it all stops for me.

I have James c1814, married to Ann Lucking c1816 then remarried to Abigail Blackman 1821.

That's as far back as I go - yours looks likely though doesn't it?

and a carman drove either horse drawn trams, or horse drawn delivery vehicles especially for the railroad apparently.

Every day's a schoolday.

As we hit an Annie, an Ethel and an Arthur we like them a lot.

But then I have thought that before and crashed into a wall because families seem to use the same names again and again and again  (even for siblings!).

My ultimate James c1814 that we have found had a family with his first wife (ann lucking) before moving onto Abigail and having our edward.

Well, his first children - which only makes them half blood relations to my family)  were James (of course) ANOTHER Christopher a John (believe it or not this reappears for my father, a SECOND Christopher A susan, an Ann, a Sarah (my name) an Ann and a Phoebe (now a very famous Cates indeed).

So he had two christophers and then in his second marriage an Edward who then called his son christopher and he called HIS son Christopher.  And they used the same middle name at least twice!

It almost feels sometimes that it's designed to confuse.

I wonder what 'a carman' is.

I may have errored in my pm because this is the full set.

my 'unknown' girl is from Frederick.

He married Charlotte Mann (c1873) and I have them with a daughter, but I know no detail of her.
