I'm researching my husband's family but cannot find any trace of his great grandfather in the 1901 census.  He was then serving with the Medical Staff Corps and his wife Dora Hague and the children were living in Portsmouth.  Had he been in the uk he would surely have turned up in a census somewhere - I'm now wondering if he was serving in South Africa.  Can anyone tell me how I could verify this?

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Re: St Mary's Mission, New Street, Andover. Help please

I can't help you with your query but it certainly took me back a few years.  By 1970 the cottage had been split into two and we used to rent 'Church Cottage Annexe' while the main body of the building was an army officers hiring.  The name cottage brings to mind a small property which it certainly wasn't: it was a substantial town house which must have dated back to the 18th century. It is quite likely that the lady ran the mission from one of the lower rooms when it was a single property as there must have been at least three or  four  large four reception rooms downstairs.
Our bedrooms were on the third floor, almost level with the church belltower, and if we every slept in on Sunday we were almost shaken out of bed when the bells rang.
Thank you for the memories ...

Cumberland / Nicholson family Aspatria
« on: Wednesday 16 August 06 08:57 BST (UK)  »
Is there any one out there researching the Nicolson family of Aspatria who might be able to help me?  I’m digging into family Ashton and have got as far back as Robert Ashton b. 1784 who married Martha Nicolson 1782 in Dalston [she was the daughter of John and Rebecca Nicolson of Aspatria].
Robert and Martha had a son William b. in Dalston 1807 they then disappear from the radar.  William turns up in 1841 in Bury and then again in 1851 in Preston.
Does anyone have Nicolsons in their tree who might be able to give me some information?
I don’t know whether the whole family left Cumberland or if it was just William who struck out to Lancashire on his own.  [William records his occupation as ‘engineer’ probably working in cotton mills].

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Re: Ashton Family Dalston

Many thanks Ange.
Its more than probable that Williams parents were dead by then and if he was an only child the connection with Dalston would have ended.

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Ashton Family Dalston
« on: Thursday 27 October 05 13:22 BST (UK)  »
My G4grandfather William Ashton [living Janet Street, Preston 1851] gives his place of birth 1807/8 as Dalston, Cumberland.  He was an engineer, probably working in cotton mills, so was likely living in Buckhowbank area.  Could anyone tell me if there were any Ashtons - probably in their 70s-80s living in the area at time of 1841-51 census?
I know its a long shot but can turn nothing up on present 51 UK census.
Janet
PS:  Common first names in the rest of the family...William, John, Robert, Lucy, Martha

Lancashire / Re: William Penny look up please

It certainly was a long illness.....13 years!  I can only assume the hospital performed the same function as an old folk's home today....perhaps she'd had a bad stroke and needed care.
I wonder if Laneast is meant to read Lancaster re: Wm?
Many thanks Wendy.

Lancashire / William Penny look up please

Can any one help me with William Penny 1796 - 1875 m Margaret Crane at St John's Preston in 1826.  Their address was Great Avenham Street, and most of the family and in-laws lived in the Avenham area.  I have only his marriage date and his place of death...Goosnargh Hospital 1875... if any one could look up his address and occupation in 1861 or '51 it might help me in my searches.
Even better, if anyone has the Pennys in their tree and could nudge me towards his birth family origins!
