Ayrshire / Andrew Jardine McCall
« on: Sunday 04 September 11 16:19 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather Andrew Jardine MCCALL was born 19th May 1882 in Monktown Ayr on the birth certificate it states he was illegitimate, his mother Margaret Neil MCCALL (field worker) in the 1891 census he is with the Grimmond family in Arbroath.  Margaret MCCALL married John GRIMMOND on the 9th August 1889, Margaret's father is given as Adam Mccall, road surfaceman.

John Grimmond had been married before to a Grace DONALDSON in 1871.

When Andrew got married in 1915 to Joan FINDLAY (who was also illegitimate) his name is now Andrew Grimmond his father given as John Grimmond.
Would there have to be a legal change of surname? My father was born on 22.11.1918 as John Grimmond were we really Grimmonds? Any help would be most grateful  thank you

Thank you for the information, I believe the child Sarah McCall Tate was living with a family called Lawrence in the 1911 census as she had become Sarah McCall Tate Lawrence  not sure if you was adopted or they just took her in.  All a mystery.

Thanks to help given on this site I now have the birth certificate of SARAH MCCALL TATE born in West Sunderland 14th June 1903.  The mother is Annie TATE occupation Lady's companion, and living at42 Mainsforth Terrace West Sunderland, no fathers name.   I wonder if anyone can help me find information for Annie Tate.  I feel the MCCALL name maybe the fathers surname or Annie's mothers maiden name.  I have been searching both ideas.  Thank you

Yes her mother still there father had died by the 1911 census, I have tried marriages but nothing in the area, although I know she could have moved, but with quite a common name very difficult all the rest of the family remained in the area. I tried the deaths nothing seemed relevant thank you for your help and replying.  It will probably remain a mystery.
