Australia / Re: Robert Hutton/ Catherine Downey late 19th century

Hello, I am a descendent of Catherine Downey and Robert Hutton when they settled in Australia.  Catherine's youngest daughter, Mary Victoria, was my great grandmother. As you probably know Catherine married Robert Hutton in Adelaide and they settled in Victoria for some years before moving to Tasmania.  My great grandmother was born on 17th Sept 1873 in Blackwood, Vic the youngest of 7. Catherine was 41 at the time of her birth.  We have no real information on why they went to Tassie, except that some of the older boys went mining there. We have traced the fact that Catherine remarried when my great grandmother was still a young girl, and it appears that my great grandmother was raised in Melbourne, not Tasmania, perhaps by her older sisters. We do know that Catherine was never spoken about by my great grandmother, although she was very close to her immediate sisters - Jane and Teresa. We cannot find any information on where or how Catherine died although we have been trying across the different states in Australia.
Hoping this will be of some assistance in your own family journey. If you have any further info we would love to hear.

Hi Jaki, that's what I thought. Your grandmother I guess is Marion McDonnell. I exchange Christmas cards with Marion most years, altho I think her health is not as good as it was. I'm guessing your Mum and Dad are Jeanette and John??
I hope I'm on the right track. We visited WA about 20 yrs ago and met up with Auntie Ella which was great and got a lot of family history from her about her immediate family.
Also just prior to that we visited Gippsland in Vic where Joseph & Marianne (Downie) settled to start with and met up with the Williams sisters who were Marianne's nieces and they had lots of family history info and photo's. I'm not sure what happened to all the photo's as none of them had any children to leave them to, but there were quite a few of all the children of William and Ann Downie (nee Sinclair).
I have a bit of a print out that my Uncle Keith put together that I could send you of the Rainbow side specifically. Marion has my address. Just ask her for Anne Mansell's address.
Keep in touch and I hope I can help.
All the best
Anne

Hi Jaki, I am a descendant living in Australia of Henry Rainbow, and also of the Sinclair's from Cleat (where I will be visiting in May this year), so we must be both from the same line. I have a reasonable amount of info, but would love to know which Rainbow you are descended from.
Henry's married Matilda Withers in 1853 and had:
Joseph b 1853
William b 1856
Henry b 1857
Matilda b 1859
James b 1860
Henry died in 1864 at Buninyong, Victoria.
I am one of his great grand-daughter's, from Joseph Rainbow. Would love to hear more from you and can provide an update of most of Henry's line in Australia if that's what you require.
All the best
