Cork / Where are Bawnafinna and Whalim Lodge?
« on: Saturday 19 March 05 21:20 GMT (UK)  »
My husband's great-grandfather's (William Ford, b. 10 Apr 1880) birthplace is listed as Bawnafinna, Cork, Ireland.  I can't seem to find it anywhere, although his immigration papers state his nearest relative is John Ford of Whalim? Lodge, Blarney, Cork, Ireland.  Family history says the Fords were groundskeepers at Blarney Castle.  Is this Bawnafinna somewhere nearby?

Thanks!

Monmouthshire / Re: Where is Cwm?

Thank you all for your help!  I checked out the very informative video, and also learned that I was way off in how to pronounce "Cwm".

I'm still unsure which Cwm my Phillip GILBERT is from - the marriage in 1850, registered in Panteg, says Cwm (which is a transcription, I don't know what the original record looks like, so can't tell if it is an abbreviation or not).  However, in the 1861 census, he gives his birth place as Panteg, so possibly while born in Panteg, he was working at the colliery in Cwm in 1850.

Thanks again!

Monmouthshire / Where is Cwm?
« on: Monday 07 March 05 15:28 GMT (UK)  »
In the marriage register for 1850 for Panteg/Panteague (near Pontypool), there is a record for the marriage banns of Phillip GILBERT, miner, of Cwm, son of John GILBERT, miner,  and Elizabeth DAVIES, otp, daughter of Thomas DAVIES, founder.

It seems Cwm is an abbreviation, but which is the most likely town?

Thanks for any help - I'm half a world away from Wales, and am clueless on the local geography.

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1851, 1861 Census - GILBERT

Poking around some more on the web today, I found the marriage record of Phillip GILBERT and Elizabeth DAVIES - 1 Jun 1850 in Panteg, Monmouthshire.  The father of Phillip is listed as John GILBERT, so I think your 1841 lookup may be correct and the death certificate incorrect.

If you see John or Mary GILBERT in the 1851 or 1861 census, I'd love to know.

Thank you for your help.

Monmouthshire Lookup Requests / 1841/1851/1861 Thomas DAVIES - Panteg
« on: Tuesday 01 March 05 20:56 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for Thomas DAVIES, who is listed as the father of Elizabeth DAVIES (b. 29 Nov 1832) on her marriage certificate.  The marriage of Elizabeth DAVIES and Phillip GILBERT took place on 1 Jun 1850 in Panteg, Monmouthshire.  Phillip (b. 14 May 1825) is listed as the son of John GILBERT, miner of Cwm. and Elizabeth as the daughter of Thomas DAVIES, founder (presumbably of Panteg? as no other location is given).

In the 1861 census for Gelligaer, Glamorgan, a kind RootsChat member found for me Phillip and Elizabeth - the birth place of both was given as Panteague/Panteg, which is where they were married and their first daughter Alice was born.  Other children were born in Trevethin and Llanfrechfa.

All help greatly appreciated

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1851, 1861 Census - GILBERT

Rhys,
Bless you!  I'm sure the 1861 census info is my family.  I forgot to mention that Phillip GILBERT's (the one b. 1825) parents are listed as Philip GILBERT and Margaret WILLIAMS on his death certificate, so the 1841 census info may not be the right family, or possibly given the ages, that Philip might be the grandson or nephew of John and Mary GILBERT - does the 1841 census give relationships to the head of family?

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / 1851, 1861 Census - GILBERT
« on: Monday 28 February 05 23:48 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for Phillip GILBERT and his wife Elizabeth, nee DAVIES.

Phillip was born 14 May 1825 in Wales and Elizabeth was born 29 Nov 1832.  I found out today that their daughter Margaret GILBERT was born 10 Jun 1861 in Ty Mawr, Gallygare/Gallygear, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire.  Very exciting news, as until now, all I knew is that they were from somewhere in Wales.

Before Margaret was born in 1861, they had at least four other daughters, Alice b. abt. 1851; Mary b. abt. 1853; Sarah b. abt. 1856 and Anna b. abt. 1858.

A coal miner, Phillip emigrated to Tioga county, PA in 1863, where he died in 1906.  Elizabeth and her first 5 daughters and son Thomas followed in 1864.

I would greatly appreciate a lookup on the 1861 and 1851, maybe even the 1841 census.  Any information on nearby GILBERTS would also be welcome - it seems to be a fairly uncommon name in Wales.

THANK YOU!
