Pound Lane still exists as a path from the High Street through to Saxon Square, with a couple of shops on it. The area between it and Beaconsfield Road were redeveloped for the building of the bypass in the 1950s.

Hope that helps

Foxlease in Lyndhurst is certainly white, and I believe was used for evacuated children during the war. I know it has been connected with girl guiding for many years, but don't know if it was ever a school. At least it will be one off the list if it's  not the one.

Good luck with your search

There is a section dealing with the history of Guernsey butchers on Stephen Foote's family history site,
http://history.foote-family.com/index.htm
which gives information on the Hammonds.

Hi

There's a book called Directory of Hampshire Photographers, by Martin Norgate, published in 1995. Probably not still in print, but might be available through interlibrary loan. I'm not sure how much more information you might get from it, but might be worth a look.

You're welcome.
In answer to your question about a companion, also known as lady's companions, it would be a woman, usually of genteel birth without any other means of support, who would provide company and conversation to a wealthy woman who was at home a lot, either widowed or because her husband was out at work. A companion was not a servant, so would not carry out domestic duties apart from pouring the tea etc, but was not quite a friend either, as they were paid to be there.
I had an old aunt who I used to visit as a child, she had a companion, and I really couldn't work out what she was there for, not family, not friend, not servant!

According to Warrens directory of Winchester, 1913, there is a E J E Fear, Mrs Fear and Miss Godwin living at Barfield House, 20 Hillside Terrace, Bar End Road. Mr Fear crops up a number of times in the directory, obviously a very civic minded person.
Information found on Historical Directories website.

Hope this helps
