Hello Chris, according to what I've found, your late father-in-law was my mothers' 4th cousin. That's through my great-great-great-grandfather Joseph Hodgkins (1812 - 1851), who was the brother of Benjamin Hodgkins (c.1801 - 1867), who would've been the great-great-grandfather of your father-in-law, through Benjamins' daughter Esther, who was the mother of Tenney, also spelt in records Tehenney, Thyana & Annie.

Can send more to your email address if you wish,

Sean

Hello rebekahm28, In regards to the Hodgkins / Hoskins & related families, have you been to Eric Trudgills' website to view his history of Edward Hodgkins & also, this month (Feb) he posted a history of the Butler & related families.  Many of the loose ends with the Hodgkins / Hoskins Eric seems to have sorted out.  He has gone straight to the source & got original certs & viewed original church records.  Get back to me & tell me what you think of his info,

Sean

Hello Dale, yes I am interested in the certificate, Henry was the brother of my great-grandfather Leopold.  Could we talk further about this on my email address (*).  I am also interested in where you found this certificate, which 2nd hand shop, as we have tried over the years to track down photos, drawings etc of this family.  The location of the shop mght give us a starting point,

Thanks

Hello again ScallyW. It's been a while but I think I have some new info (theories !) on "Sophia Hodgkins". First of all, did you happen to catch "Who Do You Think You Are" in the UK with Tracey Emin about a month ago ? She's a relative who's also descended from the Hodgkins & there was a fair bit of info on the Hodgkins branch we come from in Warwickshire.

Regarding Sophia. Reading everything you've posted so far I have to say I agree with your findings. Have you found this record : Death Sep quarter 1931 Sophia BRAMWELL aged 80 Worcester Vol 6c P.96. Now we know fairly certainly that 'Sophia Hasken' in 1891 is Sophia Bramwell, formerly Sophia Hodgkis. She seems to have been born c.1851 in Worcestershire. Because she's at Hartlebury near to Hodgkins & related families she probably was also related.

Could this record be Sophia ? : Baptism of Sophia HODGKISON 19 Dec 1850 Hentland Herefordshire dau of Elizabeth HODGKISON. Also birth record Sophia HODGKINS Dec quarter 1850 Ross district (includes Hentland) Vol 26 P.246. I had thought this showed Sophia Hodgkins who married Daniel COLMAN, but I now think it shows Sophia HODGKINS who married Samuel BRAMWELL. Also what is interesting is that the Elizabeth HODGKISON (HODGKINS) shown as the mmother of this Sophia could be Elizabeth born 1826 Evesham the sister of Esther HODGKINS (1829-1888). If I'm correct then Thomas BRAMWELL / HODGKINS & his wife Rachel HODGKINS would've been 3rd cousins.

Let me know what you think about this ?

Sean

Hello it's Hodgkins Hoskins again !  Firstly could you show where Eliza dau of Sophia Hodgkins & Daniel Coleman comes in ? Do you have info on any other children of Sophia & Daniel that you could share, because all I've found is one baptism of an "Ambrose Coleman" in 1882.  There is that 1891 census in Hartlebury which lists "Sophia Hasken" & a number of children but apart from that I've found no more children.

A contact in WA has sent me a photo believed to be of Sophia when she was an older woman.  The photo apparently hung in the Crown Inn in Woolhope for many years & the woman in the photo identified as "Sophie" was known in the area as a gifted remedy-maker.

I haven't had much luck tracing the Coleman aka Butler family but there was a Butler aka Davis family around the Forest of Dean in the 1800s (cf "Ambrose Butler" in 1881 / 1901 censuses) who were close to the Hodgkins.

Finally (for now !) re: Emmanuel Hodgkins, there are actually two Emmanuel Hodgkins in census records, one born in Knowle, Warwickshire & one born in Evesham, Worcestershire.  Neither seemed to have had children.  The other brother Solomon I have found the following for in "findmypast" & also the terrific Forest of Dean family history site :

Solomon HODGKIS buried Ombersley, Worcestershire (near to Hartlebury) 16 Dec 1853 aged 23.

Finally would someone be able to help with the significance of certain areas to these families as certain areas seemed to have been more popular than others, for example Hartlebury & Woolhope in Herefordshire & also the Forest of Dean ?  Excuse my ignorance but I'd like to be able to understand what drew the people to certain areas,

Thanks & good luck

Lanarkshire / Re: Photos of Old Dalbeth Cemetery
« on: Monday 27 September 10 13:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello to all chatters on the subject of St Peters, Dalbeth cemetery. I ony happened on this site looking for info on St Peters Dalbeth cemetery as I have now found where my Glasgow ancestors were almost all buried, thanks to Scotlands People website which now lists Catholic burials. What a shame I didn;t get the info a couple of months earlier as I was right there in Glasgow during June on holidays from Australia.

Does anyone know the rough dates of when the "old" cemetery was in use, my ancestors & relatives(Reillys, Milloys, McGowans) wer buried there from the 1860s through to the 1940s ? For relatives buried there from the 1920s on, the St Peters records show Sections & Divisions within the cemetery. Do you know where Division W, Sections 17 & 18 might be ?

So it seems St Peters Dalbeth was the main Catholic burial place for East Glasgow,

Any help appreciated

Sean

Hi again, no it's definitely Tanworth with an "n", not Tamworth Staffordshire. Tanworth is also known as Tanworth-in-Arden, it's not far from the villages of Henley-in-Arden & Shirley.

HI again ScallyW. To start at the end first ! Edward Hodgkins, shown here with his 2nd wife Hannah, is my 4Xgreat-grandfather & as I believe, the father of said Benjamin Hodgkins. I have the death record of bothe Edward & Penelope & I have the marriage record in Tanworth, Warwickshire of Edward & Hannah.

By the way, do you or anyone know of any Romany / traveller connection with the area of Tanworth, Warwickshire ? It seems to be a place our Hodgkins gravitated around, coming back to all the time. It is actually a series of hamlets based around Tanworth, including Warings Green, Earlswood, Hillshaw Heath & Tanworth itself. I'd love to know the significance & possible connection of the lane where the Hodgkins & other related families are often show in censuses : Tinkers Lane. Could it be named after the tinker families who frequented this area ?

For the children in the 1841 census, I have solid evidence of baptism records for all of them & I'll show them as follows :

Penelope Hodgkins chr 23 Jan 1825 St Mary Magdalenes Tanworth dau of Henry & Elizabeth Hodgkins (Henry a Hawker of Salter St, Tanworth)
Elizabeth Hodgkins chr 26 May 1826 Evesham dau of Benjamin & Anne Hodgkins
Maria Hodgkins chr 23 Dec 1827 Tanworth dau of Henry & Elizabeth Hodgkins
Esther Hodgkins chr 25 Feb 1829 Evesham dau of Benjamin & Anne Hodgkins
Solomon Hodgkins born c.1832 (he is a mystery still, no christening record so far & no census record after 1841) - my bet is he is a son of Benjamin & Anne Hodgkins
Emmanuel Hodgkins - born c.1833 probably in Evesham - he appears in 1871, 1891 & 1901 census, but also known as Manuel Hoskins & Emmanuel Hoskins - my bet is he is a son of Benjamin & Anne Hodgkins; mainly because we have records of all of Henry & Elizabeths' children right up to Henrys' death in 1835 & there is no Solomon or Emmanuel.
Harriet Hodgkins chr 21 Jan 1838 Salford, Warwickshire dau of Benjamin & Elizabeth Hodgkins
Eliza Hodgkins chr 24 Jan 1841 Wootton Wawen, Warwickshire dau of Benjamin & Elizabeth Hodgkins

There was also a son of Benjamin & Elizabeth named William Hodgkins, also known as William Hoskins born in 1845. So you're right in my opinion, the children in the census are made up of Benjamin & Elizabeths from each of their first marriages & the final two Harriet & Eliza are their shared daughters.

I believe that Harriet married Henry Loveridge & had some 8 children, however many of the children seem to disappear from census records & BDM records after 1881. Harriet & Henry died in Pontypool, Wales in the 1880s. Eliza married Henry Boswell & seems to have had just one daughter Harriet, of whom there is no record after a marriage record in 1879/1880.

Hope this is soemthing to go on & I hope all the other readers of this topic find something in it & if anyone has any info they'd like to share, particularly about Tanworth or Hodgkins Romanies further back, please join in,
