Hi Tufty-----Just come across this site by chance.
A bit late in the day but my family lived in Churchgate at No.73---otherside of the road to your relation.
The Palace was just around the corner and from his house he would have been able to nip down Mansfield Street and dodge into the stage door within a minute!
Our family also built the theatre as my Great Grandfather was a pal of Oswald Stoll---to our eternal shame we were also the family who demolished it!
I believe the round sign that used to be on the roof is in some garden in Skegness!
I will visit family archives to see if there are any records of that area of Churchgate.
Unfortunately my Grandfather was Churchgate fire warden during the second world war and burnt most of the records in case an incendary bomb hit the place!
