Hi All ! ,
I have been looking for my Great grandmothers family (Shieb ) and because the family history had it that she was German I started there and got no where . There was nothing whatsoever on the Ance$tory site So I tried some Australian web sites and Bingo!, I found she wasn't born in Germany but Australia.

*
A little more digging found her fathers name,Mothers name and her grandparents ,Jacob and Clara Josphe Schieb.
Jacob is listed as Jacob in the New Zealand records** i have found but in Australia he is also known as Francis Jacob Schieb. Would that have been Franz?.
Why New Zealand?
Well in 1844 the Schiebs (Francis jacob,Clara ,Maria josephe and Antonia ) sailed from Hamburg on the Danish owned Sjold for a place they had bought in Nelson New Zealand . Upon arrival they were sadly disappointed and left the following year aboard the "sisters" for Hobart town ,Tasmania. ***
By this time they had a new son,Francis (jnr) Schieb .
The citizens of Tasmania raised funds for the destitute Germans to reach South Australia and they travelled aboard the "Palmyra" ,landing at Adelaide.
From there they went to the Hunter Valley and via the hunter Valley Genealogy Site I found a vast Family of relatives!
Including the fact my GGrandmother ,Clara Sussanah Schieb was one of many Children born to Frederick Schieb,Third son of Jacob and Clara Schieb.
All of this is very interesting but I also have a craving for finding exactly where the Schiebs originated but even the French site has drawn a blank where lots of Schiebs are shown in Alsace .
Jacob ( Francis Jacob) Schieb is listed in the New Zealand Records as being a Cooper and yeoman and indeed he set up at Dalwood ,Hunter valley NSW as grape grower . Dalwood was founded by George Wyndham in 1830 as a Vineyard and still operates today Wyndham Wineries . There is even a Face book page for Dalwood house that George built .
Would Jacobs knowledge as a Cooper and Vinedresser point to an area where he might have learned his trade ?
once I have a rough idea of his initial origins could I use that to search those record books?
