Family History Beginners Board / The Hampshire Telegraph 1860
« on: Monday 01 December 14 14:23 GMT (UK)  »
Good afternoon. Is it possible to gain access to The Hampshire Telegraph archives online?

Somebody advised of a report in The Hampshire Telegraph that one of my ancestors, Sarah Davis was sent for trial at the Sessions for stealing cloth, the property of Henry Wild and Samuel Francis of Alton. This is also shown in Criminal registers for that period.

Naturally I am keen to find out if this is my descendant who received a two month sentence, she had previously spent time in the Stockbridge Workhouse so it is quite possible.
Thank you

Thank you for the info Shaun, are these records from the Telegraph available to anybody online?
If so could you give me the link please. If not does the newspaper report give any further details i.e address  so I can establish if I have the right descendant

Many thanks
Peter

Family History Beginners Board / 1880's England Registry Office ID needed to marry
« on: Saturday 22 November 14 14:17 GMT (UK)  »
My ancestor married in 1885 at Stockbridge register office, he used his mother's first marriage surname.
What ID would he have needed to get married? Would he have had to use his birth certificate?

Many Thanks

Thank you Alexander, that would explain why the initials of the person is the same, but  the surname is different, for a moment I thought the person I was chasing was a bigamist!

Good evening, I am tracing some marriages in the 1980's an 1990's and I am finding that there are often a single male marrying two different women on the same record number
eg. an (A Poskitt) married a WHITE and a GURNEY on the same record
Registration district: [?] Thurrock County:
EssexYear of registration:
1980Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec Spouse's last name WhiteVolume no: [?] 9 Page no: [?] 2354
Can anybody explain this please?
THank you

dee-jay
Thank you very  much, this does look very promising it would explain why i couldn't find a death for Sarah Davis and why, after Henry Davis's birth (1859) i could only find him in the 1861 census and not any other census again(1891) until he moved to West Ham where I was born. You are a genius and I am very grateful and of course it opens another stem
Thank you again
Peter Davis (now Blake!!)
