Hi Ed,

Thanks for yours - I sent you my email contact addres by Private Message (PM) yesterday, so please check your PM inbox tray for that.

I am not related to the Molony's (or Spellissy's) in any way - my interest is just with Padre John Patrick Molony O.B.E., M.C., and his military service, only because I own the recipients medals.

Best wishes.

Mark

Hi Ed,

Thanks for yours.

I have not written-up my own notes on the Padre yet, and do not have anything substantive additional to what is already on the WWW (I suspect that yourself and Trish have covered all those sources by now?) - however I might be able to answer specific questions pertaining to his medals and military service if that helps. I can also forward copies of his medal roll entries etc, as well as a better quality image of his medal group. If that helps then fire away.

If possible I would like a copy of the image you have of him in uniform - I will send you a separate PM with my email address for sending that as possible.

Considering the present day crisis in Iraq / Kurdistan, it's sobering coincidence that we are here talking about a Padre who was once the Senior Chaplain and Vicar-General, Mesopotamia  Expetionary Force back in circa 1198-1920!

I look forward to hearing back from you when you can.

In the meantime best wishes.

Mark

Hello there,

I was interested to come across this dicsussion thread while doing some research on John Patrick Molony O.B.E., M.C.

You might like to know that the gallant Padre's medals are extant, as I own them! The medal group comprises;

- O.B.E.
- Military Cross
- 1914-15 Star
- British War Medal
- Interallied Victory Medal
- General Service Medal 1918. GV issue with clasp 'Iraq'

Attached find an image of the medal group (the forum posting restrictions on images have affected the quality of the image)

If anyone wantsa to exchange photographs / images with me, I will be happy to oblige - just ask.

As information.

Hi Sheena,

Very many thanks for your email and scanned attachments that included the picture and obituary of Walter Gerald Pringle.

Your information has proven to be a positive identification of the portrait that I have in my possession, and as you suggested is definiterly one and the same person and portrait - only difference being that the framed portrait I have has had the medal ribbons added to the tunic of Lieutenant Pringle.

Best wishes.

Yours aye,
Mark

Armed Forces / Re: Help finding Crimean War medals

Have you any more details on the soldier in question - specifically do you know if he died in the Crimean War? I ask as if he died in the Crimea it will narrow down the medals he, or his next-of-kin would have received.

Yours aye,
Mark

Hello Bougie,

I have recently sourced a fine portrait of a Scottish Officer that requires to be positively identified.

I believe the portrait is that of 2nd Lieutenant WALTER GERALD PRINGLE, a native of Hawick.

Walter Gerald Pringle was an officer in the 6th Battalion K.O.S.B., and was killed-in-action during the Great War.

The attached portrait is that of a 2nd Lieutenant of the K.O.S.B. and the youthfulness of the subject would correspond with the age of the deceased.

I know not how the portrait was done, but the 'inclusion' of the Great War ribands would be artistic license, as the subject 'if' Walter Pringle never lived to receive his campaign ribands.

As Walter Pringle was a well known character in Hawick (he was heir to the famous hosiery company of that name), I am rather hoping that your book includes both a detailed obituary as well as a fine portrait of Walter by which we might be able to positively attribute the attached portrait.

In advance many thanks.

Yours aye,
Mark.S
