I thought for years that the Middletown, CT TJF was my grandfather, but the David and Honora from Cork didn't line up with the County Mayo I'd always heard.

His death certificate shows Dominick and Mary, so being as I've found records from the Mayo/Sligo area, I'm going to go with that until I learn differently.

"Now, the part I'm struggling with is if Thomas was born in Ireland 1877 and came to U.S. in 1890s why does he consistantly give his birthplace as Connecticut (rather than say New York or some other state)"

It's argued that there were or were not "No Irish Need Apply" back in those days. Irishmen had a hard time finding work, regardless. My thought is that saying he was an American rather than a recent immigrant made job searches easier. Connecticut, to a less educated person, might not seem as close to the docks as NYC would have.

He probably kept it up because it's hard to untell a lie like it's hard to unring a bell. It's just a guess; I can't ask him. He died when I was six.

Later this month, or next, I'm going to go to Minnesota to look for birth records for my father and his brothers, his parents' marriage certificate and my grandfather's military & naturalization records.

The immigration document you found is the one I've been looking for for YEARS. Thank you.

Thanks, Kath. I don't know if they were on their way to Ireland then or if they'd had to leave Ireland for one reason or another.

It was known to have happened, don't you know"

"wileman 121" made mention of a Septimus Makin in his cousin's family tree.

My mother's maiden name was Makin; they may have been related.  I find no mention of "wileman 121" since 2007.  If you would be so kind as to contact him, I'd be most grateful.

Many thanks!

Hello.
I know it's 5-1/2 years gone, but I may be able to fill in a bit of a blank spot.

My mother was Frances Makin, b.1921, Harpurhey, of Thomas Joseph Makin and Agnes Kean Makin.

She told the tale of one of her ancestors having been born & raised in Ireland, and having to flee for his life.  He ended up in England.  Perhaps Manchester was far enough from the coast for him to feel safe there.  Perhaps not.  That may be why in one census he said he was born in Ireland and another he and all his kin were born in England.

He had to leave Ireland because one day while he was hunting for food, two of the King's men came on him and accused him of poaching the King's game.  As they prepared to hang him, he killed them both and ran away.

It makes sense to me that one would run like hell if one had just killed two police officers. I don't think waiting around for them to catch me makes any sense. There may be a rope at the end of one's life, but let's wait on that as long as we can, shall we?
