The Common Room / GRO certificates/PDFs/Digital downloads
« on: Thursday 09 January 25 16:16 GMT (UK)  »
Can someone explain to me what the difference is, if I order a birth certificate (1911) from GRO online.  The options are certificate, PDF, or digital download. But I'm not sure if a PDF or Download is just a copy of the GRO index or if its those versions of a certificate. Unless I'm missing something completely, it's not explained on GRO website.

Thank you 😊

Armed Forces / RAF Spadeadam searches for owner of lost service medal
« on: Wednesday 29 November 23 14:46 GMT (UK)  »
I saw this in a local newspaper and wondered if anyone may be able to help (I know it's not been reunited yet).

Quote
An RAF base in North Cumbria is searching for the owner of a service medal which was found on the ground during a remembrance event.

RAF Spadeadam said the service medal was found on the ground outside the Crown and Mitre hotel on Sunday, November 12.

The medal was handed to a member of the service personnel at the base during the event.

Enquiries were made with the Royal British Legion and the RAF Association to see if anyone recognised the name on the medal – SAC R Y Hamilton – to no avail.

There is also no ribbon on the medal, which may have fallen off, but is a general service medal with a Malaya clasp, awarded for service in Malaya.

An RAF Spadeadam spokesperson estimated that the medal was awarded between 1952 and 1962.

It is hoped that the owner of the medal, or someone who knows the owner of the medal, would come forward and retrieve it so it goes back to its rightful owner.

The service number of the recipient is located on the medal, so to make sure it goes back to the right person, the base will ask them what it is.

The base asks that any such person calls 016977 49232

Thanks Rosie.  I think it will be Royal Engineers, but just wanting to make sure

Armed Forces / RE Norfolk

Good afternoon everyone

I've recently been able to access some adoption records, and against father's name, it says he was a soldier, Norfolk RE.

I wondered if this is Royal Engineers?  I had a quick google but was unable to find anything directly related.  Timeframe is second world war.

Any help or suggestions gratefully received.

Thank you!

Thanks Tickettyboo, that's really interesting!  I found online last night that the records for Newburn Parish council (or at least the equivalent of the time) are available, so I'm going to try to have a look at them, and see if there is any info about employed people.

Thank you, really appreciate it. She lived in Newburn, so would assume she didn't travel too far to work.

Thank you. Didn't know about factories.

Had thought about large families, and had previously been led to believe she worked in the 'big house'. But can't imagine them having a cook just for children, but may be wrong!
