I am trying to help a friend find out about his father's wartime service. Unfortunately he only has the name of his father and that he was born in 1919. He believes his father served in the infantry and after being wounded he was in the army postal running between Brussels and Paris, I have tried to look on the National Archives but can't find any trace of him. Any help greatly appreciated

« on: Friday 12 August 11 20:34 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to help a friend find out about her father Leonard Kitchener Norbury who served in the Royal Army Service Corps and was mentioned in despatches, she has a plaque stating that the notice was in the London Gazette, the date on the plaque is 11th January 1945 though I don't know if this was the date of the notice or the date of the mention, she would like to know what the mention was for if anyone can help please, I have tried to look at the gazette but came up blank

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Re: Howden Church - Goerge ELAND
« on: Tuesday 18 January 11 14:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Godfrey,
I visited Howden minster this morning and it looks as if the approach to the church from the front gate has recently been re-laid, there are only 3 or 4 gravestones in the path now and unfortunately no Eland stone. I will try and find out what has happened to the stones that have been removed from the path and if I can find it I will forward the photo to you though it may take me a while.
Regards
Trev

There is a beautiful memorial garden at the old airfield with plaques commemorating many of the crews who failed to return, if anyone wants photographs of the garden or individual plaques  I will gladly supply them

World War Two / Re: which German Ship is this?
« on: Wednesday 13 October 10 16:18 BST (UK)  »
The debate will continue, I have been informed that the Scharnhorst was fitted with a sloping funnel top in 1943 and the photo could be her .

Further update to stop any doubt, I have heard from german-navy.de who confirm that the ship in the photo is the French battleship Richelieu. Thanks to everyone for their interest and info.

Trevor
