I'm actually researching the Reed family who married into the Manley family.  But some evidence seems to suggest that the Manley family may have originated from Lancashire.   Joseph Manley and Ann Rablyn Reed's son James was born in Coniston in Lancashire, according to the 1861 census.  I think their son Samuel may have married Ann Reed in Wales, and the 1861 Wales census for them indicates that he was from Lancashire.

Hope this helps   :)

Hi Jellybeans,

I'm also researching the family of Ann Carey and Theophilus Feutrill.   I was wondering if you've had any luck tracking down Ann's trial record?

I agree that James Reed being a miner doesn't agree with earlier posted info, so I went back and double checked.

On Henry's marriage cert, his father's occupation is definately listed as Miner, and Henry is listed as being born in Whitehaven Cumberland aged 29. He married on the 24 Dec 1873.   I also checked possible brother James' death cert, his father James Reed is listed as Mining Captain, and it states that he's from Cumberland.  He was aged 52 when he died.

Also checked Henry's death cert, 28 March 1904, and his father is listed as James Reed Mine Manager, mother Ann Graham.  I also checked pages from the Reed family bible, but unfortunately it doesn't have James' occupation listed.   :'(

Not being able to find them in the census is making things difficult, but unless James changed his occupation at some point, I'm left with him being a miner as per official records.   ???

Of course I don't know when Henry arrived in Australia either, so that doesn't help when trying to locate this family in Cumberland's census records.

Any ideas would be gratefully accepted.

Carolyn

Hi Elsie,

I am also researching this family, but haven't been able to find them either the 1841 or 1851 census.  According to Henry Reed's marriage to Sarah Ann Wilson in 1873 he was a miner, and I know that he worked for various gold mining companies in the Bendigo area.  On this marriage cert, his father - James Reed's occupation is listed as miner.  According to the Reed family bible, Henry was born on the 14 June 1839, and his wife Sarah on the 6 March 1853.

I have also found a death of a possible brother - James Reed died 20 November 1886 in Bendigo, Reg: 16752.  He died in the Bendigo Hospital, and was buried in the Bendigo Cemetery.  Unfortunately, he never married, so there isn't much to go on.  His parents are listed the same as Henry's - James Reed and Ann Graham.

I don't know if any of this helpful, but I'm more than happy to share what I know.

Cornwall / Re: Thomas Bowden BRYAR, born, Marazion

Hi Annette,

I'm also researching Thomas Bawden Bryar's family and have some info on when he arrived in Australia.  He came out to South Australia as an assisted immigrant in 1857 on board the ship Sumner, which arrived 21 August 1857.

Passenger List:

Thomas Bawden Bryar  aged 24 resident of Penzance Cornwall - Miner
Mary Ann Bryar             aged 26
Elizabeth Bryar             aged 3
Susan Jane Bryar         aged 1
Esther Ann Bryar          infant

His father Richard Bryar also emigrated to Sth Australia onboard the ship Monsoon, which arrived at Port Adelaide on the 17th March 1857.  They were assisted passengers as well.

Members of the family who emigrated were:

Richard Bryar       aged 43  Occupation Miner
Mary Ann Bryar    aged 43
Elizabeth Bryar    aged 11
Richard Bryar      aged 8

Although daughters Alice Jane and Mary Ann Bryar also emigrated to Sth Australia, they are not listed on the index for the Monsoon.   Whether this is an error or not I don't know, they may well have travelled separately, although I haven't found them on any other passenger lists for assisted emigrants.

Hope that my info is of some help to you.

Hi Brenda,

No I'm sorry, I don't know when Ann Wheeler died.  However, John remarried in Dec 1847 in London to Elizabeth Cowland, so presumably she would have died prior to this.  I'll check my records however, just in case I haven't put it in my database.

Seriously how these women survived is beyond me.  A child every other year, and for most of the women in my family, pioneers of a new country living in conditions that I can't imagine.  They were made of the right stuff.

Australia / Re: PRATT, CLOONAN, CHARMAN, HERMAN - Victoria
« on: Friday 25 June 10 12:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi Velcro,

I have been researching the Charman and Harbrow families in Australia for sometime.  Jemima Harbrow's parents William Harbrow and Elizabeth Tester were married in 1835 in Withyham in Sussex.  They emigrated to Victoria in 1842 as assisted passengers on the ship Earl of Durham.

They, like the Charman's, who were also assisted emigrants from Sussex, were brought out as part of the Henry Dendy Special Survey in Brighton.  Thomas and Stephen Charman were brothers, and they arrived on board the ship Platina in 1842 with their wives and children.  The Charmans originated in Warnham in West Sussex.

Hope this info is of some help.

Glad to help.

Yes, John Martin Bessell was brought up by his grandmother, according to the census records.  His father remarried in 1847 in London to Elizabeth Cowland, and they had one son Edward Martin Bessell born 1848.

It's a shame if my Bessell's don't belong to you, but if it's helped you sort that out, well that's great.

Australia / Re: Vic BDM Lookup please - TIPPETT
« on: Friday 25 June 10 07:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I did a check using the two spellings that you gave for Alfred.  I searched the Victorian marriage indexes up to 1920, and didn't find him.  I also searched for his death in Victoria,  but I'm afraid no luck.

Unfortunately, there are probably lots of different ways Tippett could be spelled, or mispelled.
