Fife / McGlashan / McCluachlen - Markinch / Newburgh
« on: Friday 01 April 11 10:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I might have cracked a brick wall here, and would love some comments/more info on this.  I have to rely on the internet for this, as I'm in Malaysia with no-one to bounce ideas off in person.

In 1787 a Leonard Robertson and his wife Susan McGlashan pop up in Markinch having daughter Ann, then Betty in 1790.  No marriage or other children, they both die in Markinch.  Susan's age upon burial would give a calculated birth date of around 1750.

Until this afternoon I have looked high and low for Leo and Sue.  It was not until I went back to some results (done some time ago!)  thrown up by a soundex search on "McGlashan" on scotlandspeople  for a girl beginning with an "S" that I realised in Newburgh there is a 1754 Susanna McCluachlen born to a Peter and Susanna Deuer.

Is McClauchlen a reasonable match for McGlashan?  I realise from looking at the IGI that almost all the results for this McClauchlen name are coming from Newburgh, and I wonder if there is some rogue clerk with his  own spelling!  Also there are a couple of "McGlashan" results coming up in a later period for Newburgh from the relief church.

Also, what about the name "Deuer"? I have seen that before either.

Any suggestions welcomed!

Regards, Stephanie

Midlothian / Re: John Gordon, customs officer, in Leith

Hi there,

The John Gordon who died in Leven, Fife in 1812 with the NAS archive precognition is mine, and not the Leith fellow, so there could have been at least  three John Gordons in the excise department.

Mine seems to be from Aberdeenshire, in 1785 married Christian Barron in Mortlach, and is described as of Huntly.  In 1878 he had a son Patrick in Ittingston, Huntly, then a big gap until he and Christian had Christian Jean in 1803 in Carnwath, Lanarkshire.  By 1805 Christian has died, and he remarried Elizabeth Henderson of Leven.

In 1812 he got drunk while on duty serving summonses on illicit whisky makers in Fife, and seems to have been trying to extort free drinks from some of them! It appears from the precognition that he died due to bleeding in his brain, and had external injuries to his head and loin area, it was not determined  who had assaulted him,  so there was no trial or charges laid.

Hey - the transcription of the Comrie records that someone provided here has "Ronald McDonald" on it!  (Didn't know he was so old).

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Witness name please

Thanks everyone,

It may well be William Buckeridge, who married Elizabeth Louisa Pestell in the same church a year earlier.  He was a railway porter.

You guys are good!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Witness name please COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 15 December 10 07:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Can anyone decipher the bottom witness's name to the London, 1846 marriage of John Nicolson and Marianne Wiseman?  It does not appear to be any family member that I can recognise - but Marianne and her father are a brick wall, and I need all the clues I can get!

Regards,

Thanks George for your generous offer,

Anything would be a help!  There is also Charles' baptism around 1815 to find as well.  I'm truly stuck on this branch of the tree!

regards,

Hi there,

I can help a little bit with Peter's baptism in Newburgh, and Charlotte's in Markinch.   They are too big to attach, so I will PM them.

I was looking at them, as I have Leonard Robertson and Susan McGlashan popping up in Markinch from I don't know where, having dau.s Ann and Betty there in 1787 and 1790.  I suspect they were from Perth, their names are!  I'm stuck on them.  I was hoping that perhaps Daniel having a child there about the same time and seemingly from Perth also would help me out, but I'm just as stuck as before! ;D

It is possible that Daniel and Leonard just did not have baptisms recorded, which is a scary thought isn't it!

Hi Linda,

I'd love a baptism if anyone has one, for a Mary Billington born around 1791 in Somerton, or even any BDM information on the Billingtons of Somerton.  From the 1841 and 1851 census returns, there are some Billington males there still, mostly ag lab types.  I'd love to put together Mary's family for her.

Oxfordshire / Re: Timms family - Barford St. Michael

Hi JanJim,

I guess I do mean Wootton, I just can't spell!

Martha says she was born in Wootton in her census return for 1851.

There is another interesting Timms connection that I have remembered, my ancestor,  Emma Nicholls married Martha Timm's grandson Michael Ibell, but in the 1851  census she is a 15 year old servant living at Barford St John with a Susannah Tims, age 80, farmers widow, born Barford, and Susannah's unmarried daughter Sarah age 40 born Barford.
