Slightly warmer version. Although I think the first one prints better. Faces etc. could still do with brightening up but it's the best I can manage for the moment.

Here is the full version from me. It looks a bit contrasty but that's the only way I could make it printable.

Yes, that wiki page on the 2nd Boer War is rather intense.

Did your great uncle's service record list any clasps after his medal? One useful thing I learnt was that you can tell the battles a soldier was involved with (or was in the general vicinity of) by the name of the clasps he received . The last two links I posted are useful for information on the battles/clasps and the third wiki link describes some of these battles/engagements.

If not, you may be able to find information specific to the RAMC and the Boer war on the Internet.

A thought just occurred to me. Perhaps your gt. uncle (who was in the medical corp.) treated my ancestor, who was wounded in one of the battles. :D :D

Anyway, I'm digressing! Good luck with the research.

I'm sure you'll get lot's of proper help with this one. In the meantime ...

I recently had to look up Boer War medals, having found service records for one of my own ancestors.
Depending on exactly when he served he may have been awarded the Kings South Africa Medal (KSA) or the Queens South Africa Medal (QSA). I found the following links useful and there are pictures of the medals and clasps.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen's_South_Africa_Medal
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King's_South_Africa_Medal
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Boer_War
http://www.angloboerwar.com/boer-war-period/1875-queens-south-africa-medal
http://www.stephen-stratford.co.uk/boer_war.htm

I don't think the last two are commercial sites. The board moderators can adjust the links if they feel it is necessary.

Monmouthshire / Re: Help please - Sarah Evans nee Britain

Hi

This doesn’t help much but I think this is the family in 1851.

1851 census: HO107 Piece: 2449 Folio: 168 Page: 3; (crown copyright, care of the TNA)
Living at Sowhill (Upper), Trevethin

EVANS, Thomas, head, married, 40, b. 1811, Carpenter & Joiner Journeyman
EVANS, Sarah, wife, married, 31, b. 1820
EVANS, Thomas, son, 12, b. 1839
EVANS, Eliza, dua, 10, b. 1841
EVANS, Alfred, son, 8, b. 1843
EVANS, Francis, son, 6, b. 1845
EVANS, David, son, 4, b. 1847
EVANS, Morris, son, 2, b. 1849
All born Trevethin, except Thomas who was born Bickner, Gloucestershire

Cardiff has done the hard work and found them in 1861, where Thomas states he is married. I searched for Sarah elsewhere but couldn’t find her.

Assuming that she died in the Trevethin area, then this is the Pontypool registration district.  Since Sarah doesn’t appear to have a middle name there is only one record for this district that fits if she died between 1861 and 1871.

Deaths Mar qtr 1861  EVANS  Sarah  Pontypool  11a 91

However, this is the March quarter which would mean she would have died before the census date of 7th Apr 1861 and Thomas states he is married on the census. Like Cardiff I am wondering if a mistake was made and she died before the census.

If a mistake was made and she died between 1851 and 1861, then there are a number of possible deaths within the Pontypool reg district (the index does not specify the age at death.) I counted at least eleven. Daughter Sarah was born about 1853 which narrows it down slightly.

If you are determined to find a death record, you could try emailing/ringing the Pontypool register office to ask for their advice. A search spanning 3 years should not cost you anything however a search covering ten years probably would.

If Sarah did not die in the Pontypool area then your chances of finding a death record are probably low, unless you find something like a burial record for her.

Glamorganshire Completed Lookups / Re: pontypridd families, king and pollock

Looks like you have made good progress.

Perhaps this is not much use to you but I searched for deaths for an Annie Mary Midgley (also Annie M Midgley) but drew a blank for Wales. Also searched for deaths using wildcards in the surname - m*l*y -  and no first name for all deaths between 1945 and 1965 in Glamorgan.

How sure are you that she died in Barry?

Closest I could find of the right age (born around 1891) were ....

Annie M Midgley, age 60, death date 1951 Dec Nottingham Nottinghamshire 3c 359
(should be age 61 if born in 1891)

Annie M Midgley, age 69, death date 1961 Dec Littleborough Lancashire 10d 86
(should be age 70 if born in 1891)

Hopefully you will find her.

Apologies if I've restored the uniform incorrectly. I didn't have another photo of the jacket to go by so I went by whatever I could make out on the original photo. I could tweak the jacket to look more like the photos linked to above. It would have to be in a few days though. Unless you are happy with what you have already.  :)

(I can't see any white stripes near his cuff though - no matter how much I stare)

There's still a few untidy bits on this but my eyes have packed it in for this evening.
Have a nice trip to the UK.
