There was a Reverend John Graves who was married in 1739 at the Magherafelt Church of Ireland to a Jane whose surname is missing from the record.  I suspect that Reverend Graves and  Reverend Downing provide the connection for which you seek.  (Records of the Magherafelt Church of Ireland, PRONI MIC 1/1/1A)

Unfortunately I have very little on the Dales from Dungiven, other than to to strongly suspect that they are descended from Hu Deal who settled in Antrim ca 1690.  They were originally from Ayrshire.

Who was the son baptised in 1855?   The 1831 census is helpful but just includes the names of the heads of households so any married children living with parents or inlaws are not listed. It is the head of the household, not the head of a family that is listed.

I have various Steeles from that area in my database--Farmers, shoemakers, etc. with the forenames Robert and Samuel and William used frequently.  Any ideas on what your lad did for a living?

Hello Joy,

While I have not researched the Castledawson C of I records I have researched the records of the Magherafelt Church of Ireland.

I have an entry for Margaret Lamon, daughter of James and Anne Lamon of Anaghmore, baptised at the Magherafelt COI on December 2, 1855.

This may be the last who married John Dougherty.

There was a Mary Ann Keilly baptised in Bellaghy RC church on July 10, 1862, daughter of James Keilly and Sarah Agnew.  Note that the surname could be spelled Kielly, Kelley, and Kelly depending on who was holding the pen.

How sure are you of the birth date of Joseph?  There were Joseph McGuckins born in 1868. and 1872,  and quite a number of Joseph McGuckin marriages both in the Magherafelt and Cookstown areas.  A lot of folks from the Magherafelt area married and baptised in Cookstown.  It seems to have been a popular name with the McGuckins and is found more frequently in that family than most.

The McGuckin surname sort of morphed from Maguigan which was spelled Maguikgan in later records and later still McGuckin.  There is a Townland in Artrea, not far from Magherafelt which is Ballymaguigan, eg Maguigan's Town.
