Armed Forces / Lieut Robert Valentine WHITEHORN Aus- help please
« on: Tuesday 25 June 13 05:27 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out what happened to Lieut Robert Valentine WHITHORN b14 Feb 1884 South Australia, after he disembarked the 'Konigin Luise' in Jan 1920 in Melbourne Aus.

His wife never heard from him again.

I can find no trace of any death record for him anywhere in Australia.

In his National Archive file there is a "Medical Report on an Invalid" file dated the day after he would have gotten back. Typed on there are the words "No GSW No Disability".  Also says his "appointment was terminated" and mentions "termination of period of enlistment".

Can anyone offer any opinions on what happened to Lieut WHITEHORN or on his file?
Thanks in advance

Thanks Muss

I hadn't see that one. However in light of what I found last night, doesn't surprise me.

A Sarah Binks, was in the Sydney Benevolent Asylum - looks like she had 2 children there - Mary Alice and George Andrew. This is confirmed in the NSW BDMs. The female baby did not live.

Thank you  ;D

Good point. I'm not up on NSW geography, actually geography full stop - so you input is
appreciated - thank you  :)

Certainly kept me searching on the UK BDMs for a long time tho' - especially as I thought her father was George!

I am actually researching the TOBIN line - but got stuck in Nova Scotia - so thought hers would be easier - oh how so wrong lol

Thank you for that information Debra
I did reply a while ago - but when I spell checked my loong reply the forum locked up, and it all got
lost in cyber space somewhere..so here we go again!

There are 4 poss children from Sydney and Grace BINKS - 1837 - Louisa (again 3 registrations - same
year though); George 1840; Elizabeth 1846 and Sarah.

Interestingly Sarah with her first marriage to Henry MORGAN (1874), had her father's occupation as "soldier", name as Sydney, and no name for her mother. Henry appears to have deserted her (she placed ads in the SMH in Feb 1881 stating her intention to remarry if he did not reappear).  She remarried Thomas TOBIN in Apr 1881, and her father's occupation is now "surgeon", his name is George Sydney PINKS, and her mother's name Frances ....... On her death certificate, her father's name is BINKS, occupation "soldier", and mother's name Grace (surname not stated).

Both her husbands were mariners. The only document that states place of birth as Paterson NSW is her death cert - all others say Cardiff Wales. Her age varies slightly too. She was married in C o E churches/Presbyterian.

Thank you.

Yes from the Trove accounts - Sydney's death and the way it came about was not very nice.
And I did wonder about the welfare of the children. There was a coroners inquest as well I found.

Maybe the Wales came from New South Wales? ::) On a few of Sarah's documents she did not name her mother.

Morning!
I am doing some research for someone and would like some advice on obtaining a birth certificate for a Sarah BINKS.

NSW BDM is showing 3 dates for this lady for the same parents - Father (Sydney) & Mother (Grace) - of 1848/1849/1850. All have separate reference numbers.

Any advice on which to order? Only her death certificate is showing place of birth as Paterson NSW - all of her other documents showing Cardiff Wales. I know about her marriages (2) and her children's births - just not her origins.

Thanks MC

Just a small update:
Received Margaret's death certificate by email this morning.

She passed away in Hokitika Mental Hospital on 4th Aug 1947. The undertaker was the informant...sad really..no named father/mother. She was a spinster, and "had secondary dementia some years".

The only new information I have is that she was in NZ for 32 years...so still don't know, and I guess may never know why she was there..will keep digging. Thanks again everyone for your help.  :)
