The Common Room / Re: Has Anyone Every Come Across This Symbol on the 1891 Census?

Thanks guys, I didn't read it as an asterix, but a square and 4 dots which I know is symbol for certain things (vinegar!) but if it is an asterix it makes perfect sense as you say.

Hi,

Has anyone ever seen this square with four dots symbol on a census return before? This is for Turk's Row in Chelsea, and is a common lodging house. The way the inhabitants are listed is strange too, but not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Many thanks

No, it's to prove or disprove an old family story that's all! Thank you.

Many thanks to both of you and I hope I'm not breaking any rules, that was never my intention and I apologise if I have. Yes. The issue is I'm wanting a list, if indeed there are any at all, of the baptisms that took place on that specific day at that specific church. FreeReg only works with the first 3 names of the surname or first name so there's too many variants. But thank you for the Gray information.

Hello everyone, I wonder if anyone could help me. It appears that the only location for the Radwinter St Mary the Virgin baptism records for 1888 is here:

Essex Onlinhttps://www.essexarchivesonline.co.uk/result_details.aspx?DocID=479867

I've checked Ancestry, FindMyPast, FreeBMD and Family Search. Does anyone have access to this service and if so could they tell me if there were any baptisms specifically on Sunday 2nd September 1888 there? If there is could I have the details please? Many thanks

Many thanks for the responses. Unfortunately it's the baptismal records (if there are any) that I need, specifically in the 1880's. Many of the family I know to be peculiar people have baptism records in C of E churches, but some branches do not. Some also just stop at the start of the 1880's. Anecdotal family history states that baptisms were being done during this period, but whether these 'baptisms' were more unlogged family get togethers for blessings or whether they had a formal record of the service I open to debate. Thank you all anyway.

Thank you for your replies. Would you say it looks like they don't baptise children or they just don't keep records? Or have I misunderstood?

Hello, does anyone know if / how the Peculiar People of Essex kept baptismal and marriage records? Specifically in the late Victorian period? For anyone not familiar they were an evangelical branch of methodism who split and formed their own church. Eventually they split themselves into old and new Peculiars. They were linked to the Oxford Movement and are now part of the evangelical Church movement. Any information gladly received.  Thank you.
