Lanarkshire / Re: Provosts of Glasgow

Dear Rockford,
Thank you so much for the link to the list.

This is absolutely what I was looking for and a confirmation of my long held belief that we were the provosts in Lanark, until removed by parliament in 1648. We were then invited to Argyll by the Campbell's as Covenanters, to become the Ballies and Tacksmen of the region.
It is also worthy of note, that a Campbell replaced a Stewart, immediately after his departure!

With my grateful thanks,

Charles.

Hello D.

You pose a very interesting question and to be honest, I don't "think" I have the answer just yet, but two heads are better than one as they say, so perhaps between the two of us, we can sort these Stewart's out!
I have John Stewart's Lord of Lorn's painting. If you would like a copy, please send me your e-mail address.
We believe (but cannot prove) that our line came via him probably from under someone else's bed sheets at the time.
Using Scottish naming patterns, the following tree fits that pattern:
1/. Alexander Stewart "Wolf of Badenoch" c. 1370 to 1406
His eldest son was Alexander of Mar who died in 1435. He married a Isobel who was the countess of Mar, hence his title.

2/. James Stewart 1st Earl of Buchan 1447-1499 known as "Hearty James". His son was born to his mistress Margaret Murray, named

3/. Alexander Stewart 2nd Earl of Buchan 1468 to 1505 with wife unknown had issue:

4/. James Stewart 3rd earl of Buchan 1492-1547 with wife unknown had issue:

5/. James Stewart. Master of Buchan and Earl of Traquair. He married Christian Strang of Fife. They had issue:

6/. James Stewart b. 1604. Alexander Stewart b. 1606. Margaret Stewart b/d unknown and Isobel Stewart, who died young.

My own line is filled with James’s, Alexander’s, Isobel’s, Margaret’s and John’s (Gaelic is Ian)

Regards,

Charles.

Argyllshire / Re: McDERMID / McDIARMID

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to add my Stewart family connection to the Mcdiarmid family files here, as it may help (or hinder!) someone...

Jean Stewart b. 1793 "on Park Farm" Argyll.
She married James Mcdiarmid and had issue:
Donald b. 1824
Alexander b. 1825
James b. 1828
Archibald b. 1831

I have the entire Stewart family tree back to 1620 if anyone is connected to the "Park" Stewart's.

Regards,

Charles.

Hello Marcie,

If it is still available, I would be very happy to see a copy of that list, as my Stewart/Stuart family (we believe) came from Lanarkshire prior to their move to Argyll in the early 1600's.

Having read the last will and testament of several Stewart's, the position of provost has arisen on a number of occasions, hence my interest.

With grateful thanks,

Charles. 8)
