Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Re: Sawley Parish Records - WILCOX
« on: Thursday 24 November 11 12:16 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you Darryl.

All information is useful as collectively these items may unlock the problem.  Unfortunately I am not at that point yet with my Wilcox line, nor on most of my other ancestral lines at this time, the late 1700s.

Best wishes,
Ken

Thank you Carol,

I haven't found a brother called James, nor a cousin, but I'll keep looking.

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Sawley Parish Records - WILCOX

William Wilcox is my 3 x great grandfather.  He married Elizabeth Lakin in Burton on Trent on 10 Oct 1813.  Elizabeth was christened in Stapenhill, but I cannot find a christening record for William in that parish, so my problem is: Where did he come from?  I have eliminated a William Wilcox born in Alrewas, near Burton.  The one I am interested in now was christened in Sawley on 18 Nov 1782 and his parents were Charles and Elizabeth.  I have found a marriage record on FamilySearch for William Willcocks and Ann Elliot in Sawley on 11 Apr 1819.  The question is whether this William is the one born in 1782.  If he is, then I can eliminate him; if he isn't then I can investigate him further.

I would be grateful if someone could do a marriage lookup for me to check William's age when he married, his father, and any Wilcox witnesses, assuming this information is given on marriage records by this time.

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Shepshed Suicide

Andy,

My long shot has not paid off!  My William's parents were Samuel Wilcox and Hannah Wilson, both born in Orton.  Thanks anyway.

Hi Andy,

I have a distant relative called William Henry Wilcox.  He was born in Orton on the Hill, Leicestershire in Q2 1885.  He is on the 1891 census living with his grandmother, Eliza, in Orton and is also on the 1901 census living with his parents and sisters in Outwood, near Wakefield.  I cannot find him on the 1911 census, although I don't have full access.  A couple of the Wilcox men from Orton had moved to the Coalville/Whitwick area in the 1880s so if he came back to Leicestershire he may have gone there.  At the time of your ancestor's burial, my William would have been 28.  Do you think they are the same person?

Hi there,
I went to Lichfield Record Office today and found your ancestor's marriage record.  It says:

The Banns of marriage between Thomas Toft and Frances Brown were published on the 3rd, 10 and 17 days of January by me ? Halford, Vicar.
Thomas Toft of this parish, house carpenter, and Frances Brown of this parish, spinster were married in this church by Banns on 26 January 1768.

Both made their mark instead of a signature.  The witnesses were Elizabeth Finney and ? Robinson.

This record is numbered 150.  Presumably the vicar or scribe enters that number when he fills in the details.  The next record, at the top of the next page, is also numbered 150.  The couple who were married on this record were Samuel Rogers and Elizabeth Ridge, on 16 April 1768, by Licence.

I guess that this explains the confusion.

Hope that helps.

Gadget and Simon,
I did e-mail Leicester City's historian a few months ago, but have had no reply.  When I found this thread, I thought I had a second bite at the cherry.  Thank you for the information, but if "b Carlisle" means that this Arthur Starkey was born in Carlisle, then it is not my grandfather as he was born in Coalville.  Can you confirm please.

Leicester Fosse became Leicester City, not sure when, but I think it was after the date I gave you.
