Hi

I live in Orcheston  and this is a list of Lowther's remembered

Chambre Brabason Ponsonby  -  Rector  -  Memorial
Eliza Sophie Memorial
Frances Memorial
George Memorial
George Gorge Beresford - Memorial
George Pantin Rector

I am sure that this is where some of them are buried. It is just that some of the headstones etc are so badly worn it is difficult to say who is buried there but I will have another go at trying to work out what the headstones say.

I have been trying to make a record of the people who have live in Orcheston and there were gaps for some of the Lowthers but I think i may now be able to fill some of those gaps

Try looking at the website of Mandy and Duncan Ball. They have extensively photographed many of the headstones etc in Wiltshire

St George's church is now redundant and only open occasionally. i was there last Saturday and will be there again in a few weeks when I will have a closer look. From what I can see on the photo I think it says something about being buried in Lisbon but will check it out.

Maureen

Thanks Anna for taking the trouble to contact me. I am new to Roots Chat and I can't get over, how in a short space of time so many people have been willing to help. I did know where Richard was born and christened but what mystifies me is why the war memorial says he was of this parish. I can find no connection after his christening, unless that was enough to refer to him as of this village, Orcheston St George, Wiltshire, UK

Thank you so much

Maureen

Hi Richard

Thanks so much for replying. You will know me, Maureen Harnett from Orcheston I have been doing some research on various things and completely forgot that you would have a load of info. Perhaps we can meet up and swop what we have.

I am really new to this and the instructions I read said don't use your own name so I didn't.

The reason Istarted doing Roots Chat was because I came across a site set up by someone in Australia seeking information about the Lowther family.

I am also trying to trace the background of the five men named on the WW1 memorial in St George's.

I also think it would be great if the history of those buried in both churchyards could be researched.

I have a new e.mail address now  -  Moderator comment: email removed - see above

Regards

Maureen

A great big thank you to those who have replied. I had checked the census reports but had missed what I was looking for. It has been a great help. I now know a little more of his background. I had guessed that Tracy was his mother's maiden name but what of St George Thanks to you, I know that was where he was christened could he possibly have been named after the church he was christened in; could that have been why he is on the war memorial as of the parish.

Richard is on the WW1 war memorial in our local church, St George's Orcheston, Wiltshire He was born in a neighbouring village and christened in St. Georges. He is shown as of the parish but other than his birth and christeneing I can find no connection with Orcheston and would be so grateful if anyone can through any light on this for me.

Thanks

Thanks Charlotte

I have over the years managed to find two or three but we are a very small village and as postcards have been losing popularity for quite a few years now they are becoming difficult to find. Whenever I am anywhere where there is an antiques sale I look for them. The people running the stalls often look at me as if i am made when i ask, shaking their heads as they have never heard of the place.

I just thought there may be someone somewhere with one hiding away in a drawer.

Thanks very much for your help

Kind regards
