Essex / Re: Exact marriage places
« on: Monday 28 August 17 01:27 BST (UK)  »
Any idea in which Parish the 1887 Essex marriage may have taken place? Dunmow registration District for that time frame has 27 parish registers that would need to be searched.

I have looked at Great and Little Dunmow Parish Marriages but it does not appear there so that leaves 25 to search.

Something to consider.......Could they have been non conformists?

Ah... Island time...I should have thought about that, thanks for the reminder ;)

I think I will send another email and wait very, very patiently but, knowing my luck, the ones I want will have gone to dust anyway.

Thanks
Chris

I have found the references I need to identify and hopefully obtain two wills from the Jamaican Record Office.

I did email them for advice last October as to how to order, possible cost etc. but never received a reply :(

So has anyone any experience of ordering wills from Jamaica? Any advice on the best way to go about it would be gratefully received.

Many Thanks
Chris

It looks like there were specific Porters for all sorts of things at the docks...

http://historicaleye.com/other-features/top-of-the-docks.html

"Historian Ed Gilnert noted that below the stevedores, watermen and lightermen were the ‘interminable levels of skilled workers’, such as the ‘corn porters, deal porters, coopers, riggers, those who specialised in short-stay docks, tallymen, warehousemen, pilers, baulkers and blenders.’7 He continued: ‘At the bottom of the heap, and reviled by all the other waterside workers, were the ordinary dockers’.8 But here there was a further split between the regulars and the casuals, with the latter sub-dividing themselves into their own complex hierarchy."

There is probably a family connection to Joseph's master somewhere, however distant.

Devon / Re: Pinhoe/Clyst St George/Heavitree Banns and Marriage query

Thank you for your reply.

I hadn't noticed that the Banns for Clyst St George were missing from the parish collection list. I think that adds more weight to my theory that at some point the parish of Pinhoe has been mistakenly, and confusingly, added as 'Place' to the index.

I did a little more digging and when the bride marries for the second time the marriage takes place at Clyst St George, again both 'of the Parish', but the index lists the place as Pinhoe!

I wish there was an easy way of scrolling back, or jumping pages, on FindMyPast to get to the start of a register to see what it actually says as you can with Ancestry. Fiddling about to try and find the first page by searching just didn't work for me this time :(

Anyway I am sticking with Banns and Marriage at Clyst St George ;D

Thanks again
Chris

Devon / Pinhoe/Clyst St George/Heavitree Banns and Marriage query
« on: Monday 13 July 15 15:14 BST (UK)  »
This is a puzzle and I am hoping someone knows, or can work out, the answer :)

On FindMyPast I have the banns read at Pinhoe for a marriage that later takes place in Heavitree.
The banns state that the groom is of the parish, so Pinhoe, and the bride of Heavitree but the transcription gives him of Clyst St George.
http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbprs%2fdev2%2fbanns%2f72088%2f1

The marriage in Heavitree states bride is of the parish, so Heavitree, and the groom is of Clyst St George.
http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbprs%2fdev2%2fmar%2f164302%2f1

So how would the banns transcriber know that the groom was of Clyst St George, as the actual image entry only states 'of this parish', unless the register was really for Clyst St George?

Also if it really is a Pinhoe banns register why would banns be read at a church unconnected to the couple when they went on to marry in the bride's home church? I am pretty sure there was no reason for secrecy.

Any knowledge or ideas would be very welcome as I am stumped!

Many thanks in advance
Chris

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / IZOD - Apprenticeship Record
« on: Wednesday 08 July 15 11:03 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help me please.

I have found an entry on FindmyPast for the following Apprenticeship...

Apprentice: William Izod.
Master's name: John Lock (although in the actual IR 1 it looks like John Rock)
Indenture or registration year: 1768
Registration year: 1768
Master's occupation: Baker
Master's place: Evesham, Worcesteshire

Does anyone have access to Apprenticeship records for this period and would be willing to have a look at this one for me? I am particularly interested in William's father's name, occupation and place of residence, if they are given of course.

Many, many thanks in advance for any help.
Chris

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / Thornborough Burial - Robinson
« on: Sunday 31 August 14 13:41 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping that someone has access to the Thornborough burials for the period October 1778 to March 1780 and would be willing to do a look up for me.

I have a baptism in October 1778 for a William Robinson to a John and Mary and a second in March 1780 for another William, again to a John and Mary. I am looking for a burial of the first to confirm that they are the same family and therefore the second child being named after the first.

I am pretty sure there is only the one John and Mary Robinson family baptising children in Thornborough at that time but I don't want to assume it :)

Many thanks in advance for any help.
