The Lighter Side / Re: Marrying your dead wife’s sister
« on: Sunday 18 February 24 22:59 GMT (UK)  »
My fathers first wife dies whilst he was in the army during WW1. They had 3 very young children. The wifes youngest sister was looking after the children but could not continue as she had young children and about to give birth. The eldest unmarried daughter agreed to loo after the children but would not live in the same house as it 'was not done for a single women to live with a married man'. So he married the sister, at as told by those children a terrible wife and mother. She died. A few years later he married my mother but the children were grown and had children who we went to school with.

The Common Room / Re: Tracing an illusive Railway employee, London, 1930s

Growing up in England we were a railway family. The certificate is correct, there were dining car
attendents. Dining cars were added to long distance trains, especially the Flying Scotsman.
It was really nice to have a meal or a tea and be serve by the attendant who was dressed in short fitted white jackets with a clean towel over his arm. You had your own tea pot, mild jug and sugar bowl. Not sure if they are still in use as I have not ridden a train for many years having moved to USA.
My son who was with me in 1971 was excited for his experience having a meal on he train from London Euston to Birmingham New Street.

Do not know if you know what a platelayer is, but they are a gang of men who lay the railway line or tracks.

Thankyou Mosiefish and Yegvard   for your answers. I did get the christening from family search but it seems to tie in with other family. My ancestor is William Bradley christened 8 Sept 1780 Kidderminster, Worcs but born in Tadnan, Glos. Cannot find any Tadnan or anything like it in either county. His parents were Samuel and Elizabeth Jevins/Jovens.
I will hopefully be going to the UK later this year and would like to get a little more confirmation before I start.
Thanks, Brit
