Trish - thank you, that's very kind of you to look up for me. I do have all that already, except I hadn't noticed that marriage before with James Pratt as a witness. I'll have to look into that. I'm really just hoping to find the record of Hannah's birth in Malta or information on who her mother was (Elizabeth would have been quite old when Hannah was born).

Thank you!

Ken - I spoke too soon. It looks like he was a corporal beginning in September 1815.

Hi Ken,
The WO 25/339 record I found for him lists his last name as Thorby. I'm not sure his rank, but I don't think he was an officer. I assume just a private?

Thanks,
Sarah

Armed Forces / Malta - British soldier - baptism 1814-1815

Hello,
I'm looking for advice on how to find record of my ancestor, Hannah Thorby/Tharby's birth/baptism in Malta in about 1814-1815. Her father was with the 14th Regiment of the Foot, possibly 2nd Battalion  but I'm not positive. On the 1841 census her birthplace is listed as Malta, but I've not been able to locate any records pertaining to this. I also do not know who her mother is, though I suspect she was from the Mediterranean (a lot of otherwise unexplainable Mediterranean dna from this side of the otherwise very British family). Any advice on where to look for these records or who would have produced them at the time? Would they be local church, military, etc.? I've checked findmypast for my Hannah and not found her.

Oh, I have her father, William Thorby/Tharby's WO 25/339 record of his service with the 14th and it doesn't say anything about his daughter. Would there be other military records I could locate that would give more detail on his service and possibly his family? He was with the 14th from April 1, 1809 - April 24, 1816.

Thank you,
Sarah

Hertfordshire / Bramfield burials
« on: Saturday 06 November 10 06:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
Can anyone help me? I have ancestors who died in Bramfield in the 1840-1850s and were buried there - is there still a graveyard that I could visit to find their graves? Where is it and who would I contact to find out their grave location? Thank you so much,
Sarah

Hertfordshire / THORBY/THARBY in Herts?
« on: Saturday 26 June 10 03:39 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I am researching a William Thorby, 1772-1850, and am a bit stuck. I can not find his birth, marriage, or the birth of his daughter Hannah.

I have him as a gamekeeper at Bramfield Bury in Hertfordshire in 1839, 1841, and 1847. He died in 1850 in Stapleford. According to the 1841 (Bramfield) census he was born about 1779 and not in Hertfordshire (His burial record places his birth at about 1772). His wife Elizabeth was born about 1768-1779 and the 1841 census records her birthplace as either Ireland or Foreign (though I think it's an I for Ireland). His daughter Hannah was born about 1814 - the 1841 census has her birthplace as not in Hertfordshire, and the 1851 census lists it as what looks like Malta. I'm not sure if Elizabeth was Hannah's mother since one of her conflicting birth dates makes her a bit old, but the other is reasonable.

The family lived in Bramfield from at least 1839 (when Hannah married a James Pratt) until their deaths (1842 Elizabeth, 1850 William, 1851 Hannah Thorby Pratt Tillcock). I haven't found any other Thorbys living in Bramfield, I don't know where mine came from, and I don't know for sure that it wasn't spelled THARBY as I find both spellings.

Does anyone recognize a connection to this family or have any advice on how to find more about them? I wish William and Elizabeth had made it to the 1851 census so I'd at least have one more year's worth of info about them!

Thank you,
Sarah

Hi John - I haven't yet done three posts so it won't let me send or receive PMs.

Yes, your Sampson was the brother of my Thomas Staines Tillcock, son of William. Sampson had three children right? Henry, Horace, and Anna Maria?

Hello,
I hope you are still monitoring this posting! I'm descended from the William Tillcock & Sarah White marriage. I'm sure you've figured out the answer to your question by now, but I do know that you were on the right track. I have William's father's will and he mentions Maria's husband as being Edward Hale. I too had wondered how William and Sarah had ended up marrying in London. Are you related to the Tillcocks?

Sarah
