Hello Kerrill,

Hi Robinbird,
I live in Milltown so if you want any photos(graves or the like) just ask.

It's interesting that you live in Milltown.  I looked at the view on maps.google.ie and it seems to be a small place.  I expect that is was the post office address for these people when the probate for Thomas Donlan [1820-1886] was done in 1889 in Watertown, NY so they could have lived some distance away from Milltown in any direction - north, south, east or west.  I have read items of Irish people walking many, many miles to get from one place to another.

Just to mention - besides his many next-of-kin in Milltown, Co Galway & the USA there was

nephew William KELLY, son of Honora [nee Donlan] lived in Holdon, Lincolnshire, England
nephew Mathew LOFTUS, son of Margaret [nee Donlan] lived in Brig, Lincolnshire, England

And Thomas was in debt so there were no assets to send to the next-of-kin, merely notify them that the estate was in probate.

I have not yet had the time to go through the RC parish register.

I am enthralled with the lives of ordinary, everyday people that show up in old documents.  I have posted snippets from many documents at https://sites.google.com/site/irishgleanings/

Regards,
Sheila

Which Catholic parishes should I search to find records of the following people ?  Ellen BURN (nee DONLAN), Ellen WELCH & James LOFTUS [children of Margaret LOFTUS (nee DONLAN)], Peter KELLY & Patrick KELLY [sons of Honora KELLY (nee DONLAN)] resided in the area of Milltown, Co Galway.  They are mentioned in the Nov 1889 probate of estate of Thomas DONLAN at Watertown, NY.

Are you looking at the death registers page by page ?  Perhaps there is no READABLE death cert.  FHL entry for Manhattan death certs 1866-1919 says "many records are light and faded and difficult to read.  Some records are out of focus and cannot be adjusted ... some certs are in books and date of death is in the inner margin and may be hard to read ..."

Perhaps inadvertent error in the data posted to IGG.

For fun, I read the correspondence of the US Consul offices at Dublin, Cork, Belfast, years 1914 through 1934.  I have extracted 900 items and posted them to the webpage http://sites.google.com/site/irishgleanings

Hope this helps someone make a connection.

Hello NZvixx,
You have the correct birth cert with dob 11 March 1874 for your gt. grandad - the son of John E. Rogers & Nellie F. Leown.  As you have explained the birth cert does not have the name of the child.

I researched the records of the US Consulate, Manchester, England which are held at the US Archives, Washington, DC.  I  found more records for your gt grandad.  Besides the US WWI draft registation for James T. Rogers there are documents for

Application for Registration - Native Citizen - 2 pages
Affidavit to Explain Protracted Foreign Residence - 2 pages
transcript copy of Return of Birth, Dept of Health, City of NY

I can email you these documents if you want to send me an email address.

Your mystery remains - where is this family of John Rogers, wife Nellie & son James in the 1880 census & any other NYC records.

Ireland / Re: Irish Immigrants returning home
« on: Sunday 03 April 11 23:53 BST (UK)  »
The original query was about returning from Australia and I do not have any info on people who did that.  I have found many - hundreds of people who emigrated to the US and then returned to Ireland.

Many of the returnees were children sent back to Ireland to be raised by their grandparents.  One of these children was Éamon de Valera.  After many years in Ireland the children got a passport to return to the US.  Several cases of siblings traveling together.

Most of the records I found were for the years 1907-1925 in the documents of the US consulates at Cork, Dublin, Belfast - for example passports applications.  I have extracted the data and published on this website http://sites.google.com/site/irishgleanings/

I am working on more but it will be several more months before I can do an update.  Hope someone finds a person of interest.

It is not clear if he left the USA for Canada and never returned - or did he return before he was buried at Cavalry Cemetery ?

If he returned to NY - I would focus on the NY state census records - 1865, 1875, 1892, 1905 - The Family history library has these on microfilm.  Also the church records for baptism of children - look for the godparents.  Perhaps you will find his brother or sister mentioned.

When did he die ?  Have you looked for any US civil war pension records ?
