Hi all,
My friend has only just discovered some family documents which show that his father John Ellis Born 1895 enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers in 1913 here in Dublin.
The most legible of the three forms is Army Form B 2079 it reads;

Certificate of discharge of No 50117* (Rank) Pte.
(Name) John Ellis
(Regiment) Northumberland Fusiliers (hand written above this stamp is possibly  “previously ……. …. Royal Irish Rifles.
who was enlisted at Dublin
on the 1st October 1913

He was discharged in consequence of
Discharged, no longer physically fit … war service Para 92 (XVI) Kings Regulations
After serving 4 years 211 days with the Colours and
Illegible
(Place) illegible                                      Signature of
                                                                Commanding                                     illegible
                                                                Officer

*Another of the documents which is practically totally illegible shows John’s number as 5011

Any help or advice you can offer as to what, if any action this man would have seen during the First World War would be greatly appreciated as I have never researched army history before.
Many thanks
John

I have posted this in the WW1 section because of John's service years 1913 to 1918 but please move if deemed necessary with my apologies.

Hi,
I was very interested in your post as I have in my possession a partial draft of an extract taken from the 'Rebellion Papers' held by the National Archives here in Dublin Ref No. 620/11/138/13  concerning the examination of John Fleming taken before a Magistrate on the 3rd September 1803.
It goes on to state that Mr Fleming was in the service of Mrs Mary Dillon, Inn Holder of Thomas Street Dublin in the capacity of ''hosteler'  during the previous 12 months and he gave evidence against a number of people whom he claimed were involved in  rebellious activities  including Robert Emmet and two brothers named Commiskey from Lucan, one of whom I think might have been my G.G.G. Grandfather.

Dublin / Re: Where to look for a burial?
« on: Friday 06 December 13 15:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Trelawn,
No luck I’m afraid. The 29th June1922 fell on a Thursday and I searched the records up to and including the end of July without success.
The Irish Civil War started the day before your G/grandfathers death and this might account for the lack of details regarding his internment.
I was unable to find Francis on the 1911 Census but did find Hary (Henry) Was he in the army at that time.
Two more questions though that might help someone here throw some light on it;
Where was Francis’ wife buried? and what part of the city was Francis living in before he entered hospital?
Oh, and by the way, where was Francis father buried?
Don’t give up just yet.

Hi Trelawn,
Do you have an exact date of death for Francis Saul? i note that there is an entry for the second quarter of 1922 in the BMD records and as I hope to visit Pearse Street Library during the week it will greatly narrow my search.

Hi Dermo and Gensearcher,
I have continued to follow up on this sad story and to date can find no record of Mary Anne’s funeral having taken place to any of the three Dublin cemeteries, Deansgrange, Glasnevin or Mount Jerome. I live in hope that Mary’s parents were in a position to have her interred in her own parish or that the Cartes covered the expenses. I was surprised to discover that there was no mention of her disappearance or indeed her inquest in any other newspapers of the time other than the initial request for information of her whereabouts as posted in the Independent..
Atlanta still stands and backs onto the sea at Dalkey Island. There is no beach as such but there is a steep jetty leading from the rear of the house to the sea and there are traces remaining on the rear garden wall of a derrick used for lowering boats.
